Thanksgiving Weekend ~ Grand Finale

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Monday 30 November 2009 4:56 am
Today was Baby ‘Lyssa’s third monthsaversary and mommy made this cake to celebrate!

I thought I had enough to eat this weekend ~ but this cake was soooo good.  Chocolate cake with condensed milk drizzle and a whipped cream topping.  A layer of Butterfinger crumble gave it some crunch.  I had two pieces together with my Metformin ☺ ~ sorry Dr. M.  I couldn’t resist.

~She is too cute for words ~
Our official ‘candle blower’ ~ he’s getting good at it!
Two Moms and a Little Baby
On to the next holiday.  I received my first holiday card from my cousin, Elena today.  She’s ALWAYS the first to send!  I need to get mine going!!  My neighbors have put up their lights today.  My hubby and I ate and vegged all weekend.  Isn’t that what we’re suppose to do?  *grin*
Are you getting ready for Christmas?  *insert 10% panic here*
Countdown: TWENTY FOUR more days.

Zhu Zhu Pet Hamsters – Are You Kidding Me?

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Sunday 29 November 2009 5:25 am

This is an advisory to moms out there looking for holiday gifts for their little kids and trying to get their hands on what’s supposedly the hottest toy  this 2009 season ~ Zhu Zhu pets.

These little hamsters that normally sell for $9.99 and are on Ebay now for $39.00 because they’re hard to find. My advise : WAIT till after the crazies die down.   It will be available after the frenzy … for much less than Ebay!  Trust me on this one!

I was there to fight/elbow/knock down other moms for Teddy Ruxpin, Cabbage Patch dolls, Pokemon and Beanie Babies (yes, the hundreds of them).  Thank goodness we knew better (I got smarter) with Furby.  And my kids were done with toys when Tickle Me Elmo was hot.  And with all the above…they all became available shortly thereafter.   *Knocking self on head*

My daughter was at Toys R Us with her girlfriend at midnight yesterday.  She told me that there was a lady who bought 10 or more of these Zhu Zhu hamsters ~ presumably to resell it on Ebay.   Thank goodness my child was smart enough not to fall for hype ~ she’s learning well!  I fell for it!!   I’m hoping she’s smarter than me!

Oh moms and our guilt and eagerness to please!!  You’re not alone.  You can make your child happy.  With patience and $10.00.

We’re At Three and Counting

We’re celebrating tomorrow.
Then, we’re babysitting TWO!!
OK, melt my heart today and tomorrow and the day after.

Camping

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Saturday 28 November 2009 10:07 pm

After all that holiday eating and festivities…we are totally vegging at home. We’re over leftovers.  Done eating. Even Newman is tired.

Last night we set up camp in our TV room ~ an add-on to this home which we recently refurbished and moved all home entertainment systems into. We pulled out the futon and decided we were spending the next couple days and nights back there, and not in our bedroom.  The room was is aglow in red from the daylight reflecting through the sheer cranberry window treatment and the room accessories. At night is is warm and cozy and warm…and cozy.

Our Red Glowing Room

I had PartyLite Holiday scents burning for ambiance so it smells like December. We watched Seinfeld and Frasier and fell into a deep sleep.  All three of us:  him, me and Newman.  Camping in our own home. A spontaneous decision to park our bodies somewhere else for a change of scenery.

We’re still camping.  Our bed is unmade.
That’s not Newman’s leg..that’s his stuffed friend.
There’s a football game on but I’m oblivious to it.  I only know that today, there are no rules. There are no ‘have-to-do many things’.  We did call in for Domino’s pizza (Philly Cheesesteak, thin crust).  That’s lunch ~ and dinner.  And the other half of my Neapolitan Dynamite Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is dessert for before I sleep. We have his and hers pints.
We have one lamp on..and the rest are candles that will burn off by themselves.  My dog is uber lazy.  So am I and so is he.  I’m watching the leaves fall from my window ~ yellow leaves from two aspen trees.
Chill day.  No rules.  No looking at clocks. No time factor.
LIKE.

Yesterday Once More

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Friday 27 November 2009 9:08 pm
We are still stuffed today, and we have the other side of the family to celebrate with tonite.

Here’s a collage of photos that I took yesterday.  This is actually a slide show I posted on my Facebook page using SMILEBOX (check them out on my sidebar on the right)  We had so.much.food but I only had room for the turkey in here.  I had a blast with the camera.  They had to pry it away from me so I could eat ☺

You can click to enlarge

No mall for me today.  My daughter did make it to Toys R Us at midnite-thirty last night and got home at 9:00 AM.  She and her girlfriend did the Santa thing and got most of their major purchases for the children out of the way.  I believe she will be sleeping in the better part of this day.   How fun to see her carry on Believing.  I’ll have my time sometime this week..or next.  For now, I’m savoring seeing my kids and kidlets and all the family Part I yesterday.

Tonite, Part II.  GrammieDaddy’s family.  Newman is resting for another big evening. He was totally conked out last night.

We’re Going Out…AGAIN??
Mercy, mercy me.  Happy day after T-day!

Happy Thanksgiving 2009

Posted by TGD | holiday | Thursday 26 November 2009 5:56 pm
Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving to all!  It’s half past nine in my morning and I’m watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.  It’s the ONE thing I watch as a personal tradition (hubby won’t watch it LOL).  But for me, it brings me back to Thanksgivings past.  We can only be grateful by remembering what we HAD and what we are blessed with this day.  And the parade and balloons and marching bands…and the appearance of Santa Claus in the end ~ that brings it all back.
And makes the holidays official.
I think I’ve said it once before…I’ll always be a kid at heart…so stuff like this ~ and the magic around the holidays ~ it brings the warm and fuzzies to my ♥  and I will always be a tradition junkie.
Our family get-together will be at noon at my sister’s home.  We have a 23lb turkey and an 11lb ham.  That’s 34lbs of meat!  We’ll have much more side dishes and treats.  I’m going to eat nice and slow and enjoy it all. My whole family will gather ~ FOUR generations.
I’m thankful for that!

Ready, Set….

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Thursday 26 November 2009 3:44 am
No..not this our turkey ☺

But she weighs the same as the one we’re having for lunch!!  Well..actually, I found out that my sister is cooking a 23lb bird…so it will be bigger than the baby.  Oh my!

She COULD be the centerpiece, though!!
In preparation for super eating for two days, I am serving pizza rolls for dinner  since that’s all I had in the freezer and I’m afraid to venture to the grocery.  My day was spent  babysitting once again and I was delightful when Nate and his mom and dad arrived!  I had All My Children and extendeds today. On the eve of Thanksgiving.  What a treat!
I’m ready for a feast!  Bring it on!
Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone!

Mom’s First Day At Work

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Wednesday 25 November 2009 3:46 am

 Baby ‘Lyssa’s momma survived her first day at work today as a new nurse.  The day was not lacking in angst but it did make things better that I was watching the little one (next week, she will go to a sitter with her cousin, Nate).  How could I not…when I got the crocodile tears yesterday.  Still, it was a pleasure to spend some time with my babyGRAND today and get her used to someone other than mom and dad.  And ‘ammie certainly had lots of love and hugs to give.

Other than getting used to being bottle fed, the day was e.a.s.y.  She only cried when she fought the foreign object (silicone nipple) and I did try three different kinds with her.   But when she was hungry…she fed!  In fact, she took another bottle after she finished the one.

But lemme tell you….the new working mom was EXCITED to come home.  I mean ‘strip off all clothes and wash the hands and gimme my baby please right now’ kind of excited! I was laughing (and took pictures). At that moment, the world was just a mom and her baby.

I’m glad it went well and was not traumatic for anyone.  Work was pleasant and she liked it. Actually, there was a party. And another one tomorrow.

I took 159 pictures today.  *laughing*   Here are some other fun ones.

Lifting her head
Chewing her hands
Lifting her head (other sider)
Sleep
And I get to do all this again tomorrow.  Just in time to be ever so grateful on Thanksgiving Day.  What can I say…I am blessed to the bone.  I am sending you good thoughts so you are blessed as well.  Peace.

Uhhhhm…make that two bottles!  She got the hang of it!  I totally rock!

But of course, we survived the day!  And we finished a whole kaboodle bottle!

And the little one?  She even had a bath!!

UPDATE:  3:15PM PM

We made progress!  Downed two ounces before the phone rang.  Momma called to check on baby at 2:30 PM.  Just when she was feeding *insert smiley face here*. I guess they really do eat when they’re hungry!  Baby didn’t  want any of it after that but was happy to chat with ‘Ammie..so we did.  We cuddled and she coo’d, sang some nursery rhymes.  Even got some tummy time.  She’s not a hard baby at all!  I even got a couple work emails done.  I’ve reheated my coffee three times … it gets cold by the time I can drink it.  It’s cold again but I don’t want to nuke my coffee as it’s nice and quiet here right now.  Sleeping dog, sleeping baby.   Shhhh..I think it might be a long nap.  All is calm, all is bright.
still in her jammies…

 UPDATE: 1:07 PM

My reliever just left ~ Owpa spent his lunch break with us and played with Baby ‘Lyssa for a bit and even took Newman for his mid day walk. Tag team! Gotta love the man!  Still no luck giving her the bottle but she doesn’t seem like she’s starving and is content in her swing.  Newman is in his crate so he won’t wake her up. I had Jon & Kate Plys 8 on the television  (!!!) just for noise ~ and now switched to HGTV.
Lunch was a PBJ with my coffee.  We were tempted to dig into the Thanksgiving ham which is in the fridge here…but we’ll wait for Thursday!  The peanut butter will keep me happy till dinner time.
We were able to play with the little one.  She smiles a lot if you talk to her and she likes looking into the mirror.  She’s still in her jammies and that’s not likely to change.  She seems happy and cozy in it.  I AM glad it’s me that’s with her today, versus a babysitter who won’t know what to do with this bitty baby who won’t take a bottle.  Gonna have to work on it some more.  Ooops…she’s awake. That wasn’t a long nap!

with Owpa who came to see me

UPDATE: 11:57AM

Rule No. 1 = Thou shalt teach your child that there is more than one way to drink milk..other than the boobie! I have tried three different nipples.  Little itty boo refuses them all and is pissed LOL.  Looking for mommy’s boobs.  I feel my maternal juices overflowing and am tempted to give her mine…but for now the pacifier and her fingers are keeping her content. She’s chomping her fingers.  Newman is mesmerized and is guarding her on her swing.

ORIGINAL POST

This is going to be an interesting day and this post will take all day to write.  It’s 9:15AM and I’m getting ready to head on over to babysit Baby ‘Lyssa as mommy starts her first day of work as a nurse.  Mom has not been farther than two feet from this babyGRAND of mine so the separation is…can I use the word traumatic (with a small ‘t’)?

Baby ‘Lyssa was suppose to go the Miss Chris who babysits Nate.  Until my daughter cried on my husbands shoulders yesterday…big tears.  And darling husband of mine says he’ll fix it.
By ‘fix it‘ he meant..’mom’s going to rescue you‘.  So there’s my day today. I’m going to be a (grand)mommy all day to a little baby ~ a special little baby.  I’m going to remember what it was like to be with a three month old. I’m going to appreciate moms of the world who stay home ~ the biggest and most important job in the world.
Wish me luck…this post will be a work in process.  All because this little itty boo and her mommy deserve all the love and support during this transition.  And, if I’m not enough, then my mom..the GREAT-GRAND is only 5 minutes away.  She’s enjoying this.  It will be my grand pas de deux…a dance of two. I think that’s what I’ll be doing all day.

See you in a little bit, little one!

M-I- C…K-E-Y……Ooops, Wrong One

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Tuesday 24 November 2009 3:28 am
I was thinking of my 2yo babyGRAND, Nate, who is having a blast in Disneyland today with his mom and dad.  In fact, today he saw Lightning McQueen and his eyes lit up with the wonder you can see only in a child.  My daughter shared a photo of happiness in a 2 year old.  Can you imagine?  Being two…and so happy!!!  Better yet, being the parents!  I’m happy they’re happy.
I can’t wait to see the pictures and hear the stories!
However, back on earth ~ while one family unit is enjoying a well deserved rest and vacation bit at the happiest place on Earth (in California), I tried to get all my Thanksgiving errands done today.  Which meant a stop at Honeybaked to pick up an almost 11lb smoked ham.  I can’t wait!!

Honeybaked Store

I got there at around noon time today and they were OUT of the 7-8lb hams.  They had people in the store and at the drive-through.  Fortunately, I went inside and was able to pick a good sized ham,  a little bigger size that I originally needed but we can definitely have left overs.  Mmmmmm and my sister is doing the turkey and dressing and other surprise dishes.  I’m going to need to starve on Thursday morning
It’s almost time to sing  ♫ ♪ T-U-R..K-E-Y…♫ ♪ ho ho ho ho ho!!
Favorite Thanksgiving Ritual
My favorite part of Thanksgiving morning is watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in bed.  I HAVE TO watch it and I HAVE TO see Santa at the end.  Then it’s officially Thanksgiving, and I can get out of bed.
Countdown…3 days

Oh boy, my dear sister is in trouble.  Her babies are growing up way too fast and I don’t know how she’ll handle it.   This little one was JUST the baby of the family, until two years ago when our kids officially started our fourth generation.   This photo seems so recent though, when they were just two little girls.  Now this baby just turned 14.

How’d that happen!

That was Then
Yesterday at her school, they had a fashion show and all the kids got to dress up. Right after that, her mom (my sister) threw her a birthday party with the entire class (and some parents) in attendance.  Among the attendees…her older brother, who flew in from Pasadena to help his sister celebrate.
With the overprotective brother
who himself was melting young and old hearts
I don’t know if the world is ready for her.  Straight A, student council, volleyball and track athlete..the world is your oyster. Stay humble, keep your grades up, jump as high as you can!  The rest will come naturally.
Happy birthday!!
And I get to approve everything.  That’s the rule!

This is a ‘free’ week, so anything goes.  And because I’m loving Saturday and the sun is out, I’m sharing a happy picture of me playing with my itty boo babyGRAND Baby ‘Lyssa when she turned two months.  This was during our monthsaversary and she’s going to wear this bib till she turns one!

Yesterday, it rained and I took this shot of droplets that were caught on a bush.  I thought it was pretty cool. I’m working on my macro skill..but you get the idea.  I didn’t have time to switch lenses.

Kinda cool, huh!  They kind of look like they’re in suspended animation and they were…in a spider web.

On another subject,  I got a bloggy award from Mindi and I’d like to thank her for it. That was sweet of you ☺ Thanks for sharing.  Awards are meant to be shared,

Move over, Googlelicious.  You’ve got competition and the competition is giving me prizes.  Hello SWAGBUCKS!
I hadn’t realized how amazing it is to search a la Google and earn points. Hello!  I swear (yes I do!) that I hit up Google search about a hundred times a day which is when I pretend to know everything but don’t, really. But now, I’m going to put my ignorance to good use and get me some cool prizes!

I got a reminder from them today since I ‘forgot’ to download their toolbar and have not been searching through them.   The email was nice and friendly and told me they miss me (awww) and said that these guys won prizes recently.
A Wii Fit For Searching!!
Okay, so that intrigued me.  And then I read how you can win  and it wasn’t THAT hard.  I already do all this anyway!  Why not get something back in return?  So I will…and you should check it out, too…if you’re into free stuff for something you already do anyway!
Now, If you all click my my widget and sign up, I get points (disclosure!) but you don’t have to! You can go directly to their site if you’re not into giving me some free love.   The cool thing is that I’ve embedded my search tool right on my own site so I don’t have to open another window when I’m wondering.  Now, that’s a multi taskers dream.  I’m starting with 6 points today.  I know I have 5 more coming.  Let’s see how this works.  You’ll be there right with me if I win anything!  Big bucks!  No whammies!
Here ya go, winners all!

Of Women and Posies

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Friday 20 November 2009 9:04 pm

When my beloved mom-in-law Beverly began getting sick a year ago much of her care was taken over by my SIL, Kym and my husband (and me, with love).  I miss her so much especially at this time of year.  Her last four months with us were a doozie of a roller coaster ride that began with an urgent call to my husband one day, about this time last year.  My husband’s cell phone rang.

Honey, I’m tired of peeing in my pants, will you please go grab me some posies in the store!”

Now you have to know that my hubby adored his mom but she drove him batty as well.  He also is not shy and will gladly venture into the Feminine Hygiene section of the grocery looking for posies.  He had no clue.  He assumed some kind of panty thing…with flowers. Pocketful of posies flowers.

Proudly finding his way to the right aisle, he was amazed at the choices women had!  And the brand names we women had to sift through each month when we had to face the evil monster and men had to suffer through our PMSes. He read the names  “Always” and “Carefree” and “Stayfree“.  Regular. Super. Maxi.  Overnights.  Thin and ultrathin.  But no Posies.  Where the dang is the posie pantyliner!  He moved over to the disposable undergarments.  Jeez, being female sucks!

Serenity. Depends. These stood out as well as the generic store brand. Men and women disposable undies (he knew he was doomed … men would need them too!!).  Still no effing posies and by this time he was wondering what in the bajesus was his mother wanting. Was posie a brand? Pantiliner, pad or underwear?  Where is the flower!!  The pocketful of posies?

After about ten minutes I get the call.

Okay…I’m looking for damn posies for Bev and I’ve gone through the baby diapers, women pads and old fogie undergarments and can’t find the posies she wants. You guys have a lot of peepee problems! What the heck are posies??

At this point, I’m cracking up.  I love how he’s so in touch with his feminine side.  I have got to love this man who would buy women’s pantiliners for his momma!  I had to save him from himself, though. Ten minutes was more than the patience he had.

Uhhhmm..honey…towards the end of the aisle, kind of in between the pads and undergarments..there’s a pink package called POISE.  That’s what she wants.  Do you see it?”

Well, of course he did.  And he had choices.  Just like we of the female species do.

Feminine Problems…Solved

Ahhhh…life is good.  I miss you, Beverly.  I need to remember how much we laughed and cried at this time last year.  But I’ll start with the posies.  ♥♥☺♥♥  And laughing. Out loud.

Yes I Did, Friday ~ Thank Goodness!

Posted by TGD | yes i did friday | Friday 20 November 2009 9:03 pm

It’s FRIDAY!!!  Bless everyones hearts if you’ve made it to the best workday of the week..the END.   And to start off the weekend, I’m participating in Jeanette’s blog meme to share with you all my accomplishments of the week (or lack thereof).  It’s always good to look back and confess or brag, whatever the case may be.  Head on over to Jeanette’s and grab a link so we can all share our week in review!  For me, well let’s see.

YES I DID! … give and get me some  Baby ‘Lyssa  love and smooches on Wednesday.  I babysat for four hours and stared, hugged, rocked and sang lullabyes to my sweet almost 3mo babyGRAND.  I can’t get enough of her.

YES I DID! … have conversations with Nate, my 2yo babyGRAND on the phone.  He is talkative and has big words!  He’s getting ready for a trip to Disneyland tomorrow and wanted to show me some things.  He doesn’t understand why I can’t see him through the phone.  Next time, we’ll do it on Skype!  I miss the little man but I’ll love on him on Thanksgiving!

YES I DID! … offer to make some lemon bars and bring a Honeybaked ham for our family turkey day next week. YES I DID! try to sneak out of making the lemon bars, but they noticed.  So I’m bringing some!

YES I DID!  let Newman sleep with us instead of by himself all week long cuz it was cold and he looked sad and lonely.  Plus he was additional warmth for us and I don’t like sleeping with the heater.

YES I DID!  Clean my kitchen and did the mound of dishes the day before my cleaning lady came.  I just couldn’t go to bed with stuff in the sink.  Next time I cook a big dish, I need to remember to do it before they come..and save me the trouble.  My house is finally de-germed and disinfectorated, smelling fresh and good for another two weeks.

YES I DID! Start a BlogFrog contest as an experiment  ~ $25 gift card to Target to the lucky winner I’ll pick on Sunday.  If you haven’t commented..you still have time.  Dontcha love free money??

And finally…YES I DID! work my butt off all week and only shelved one item today..cuz it’s raining and cold and dreary and icky.

Here’s to the weekend and then a big week next week!  ☺♥☺♥

Cooking for Two ~ Pantry Corn Chowder

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Friday 20 November 2009 2:33 am
I used to cook for an army.  Well, for six or more.  Now I cook for two people which often times means leftovers..which often times means wasting good food (we are not good left over eaters).  With a busy schedule, I’ve recently been resorting to frozen stuff that we nuke for dinner or throwing some chicken wings in my trusted old turbo oven (our favorite appliance!!)
I found a wonderful cookbook that I’m going to try and get attached to in the coming months weeks.  No, truly..I do enjoy the kitchen..I just don’t know how to cook for two!!

America’s Test Kitchen
I found this at Costco recently (Sample Saturday!!) and I made a mistake of going when I was hungry ~ at 3:00PM, my bewitching hour when I turn into Cookie Monster.  I had three samples of quiche (uber yumm) and some dried mangoes.  I left the food sample area quickly and went to the books section.  Again, I gravitated to the cookbooks (tummy growling).  There were a bunch of newly released books but this one I delighted in because it had some recipes that I want to try as soon as this weekend.
Pantry Corn Chowder
Here’s the recipe I want to try on Sunday (it’s suppose to be cold and maybe drizzly here).  Good football watching meal!!
1 pound frozen corn, thawed
3/4 cup whole milk
3 slices bacon, minced
1 small onion, minced
Salt
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/8 teaspon dried thyme
1 bay leaf  (I have a whole tree!)
1 3/4 cups low sodium chicken broth
9 ounces red potatoes or 1 russet potato cut in 1/2-inch  pieces
Pepper
1.  Process half of the corn with the milk in a food processor until smooth; set aside.
2.  Cook the bacon in a large saucepan over medium-low heat until beginning to brown, 5 – 7 minutes.  Transfer 1 tablespoon of the bacon to a paper towel – lined plate and set aside.  Add the onion and a pinch of salt and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly browned, 5 – 7 minutes.  Stir in the garlic, thyme and bay leaf and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
3.  Add the pureed corn, broth, potatoes and 1/4 teaspoon salt, bring to a simmer and cook until the potatoes are almost tender, about 5 minutes.  Stir in the remianing corn; return to a simmer and cook until the corn is warmed through and the potatoes are tender, about 2 minutes.  Off the heat, remove the bay leaf, season with salt and pepper to taste, sprinkle with the reserved bacon, and serve.
Doesn’t this sound easy to make and delicious?  I can’t wait…I have all the ingredients for this. Nomnomnom.

Uhhhmmmm…with my luck, my kids will see this and they’ll come over and I’ll have to double (or triple) the recipe…Murphy’s Law ☺

Life’s Punches

Posted by TGD | #FreeAnissa,Anissa Mayhew | Thursday 19 November 2009 9:56 pm

I never heard  of her  till yesterday when someone mentioned on a community blog that she had suffered from a stroke.  Her name is  Anissa Mayhew.   I read her about her on  Heather Spohrs blog and suddenly I wish I did know her.  In real life.

She seemed like someone I’d love to laugh with.  A great sense of humor in spite of life’s mysteries.  A woman who blogged about many different things including the leukemia that her child Peyton is currently able to beat.  My thoughts are with Anissa’s family, which includes three young children WAY too young to be without their mom. Please pray.

The interwebz all of a sudden became a small world for me yesterday.  While I was busy going through my usual Wednesday mid-week trying to finish off work, I had to give pause to think about the times in my life when life gave me the most unexpected of punches.

Yesterday was one of those days for the Mayhews.  I join the hundreds (thousands) of people hoping for her full and complete recovery.  I hear she’s a fighter.  I hope so and I pray that she’ll continue to beat the odds.

These gloves are for you Anissa.  I hope you fight like a champion…and I wish you a full, quick and complete recovery.

Jealous and Green With Envy

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Thursday 19 November 2009 4:25 am

I am not the only tie dye lovin’ or wearin’ person in  my family.  Apparently, I’ve got groovy relatives out east and can I just say I am totally JEALOUS right now?

No, not because they live by the water and can hear the waves crashing on the wall when they go to sleep!

Not because they get to watch beautiful sunsets (and send it to me by text with “We’re thinking about you!” in the subject line).

I’m not jealous because they have a gorgeous tan all.year.long.

I am totally horrifyingly jealous because they drove all the way to Tennessee today to watch Bruce Springsteen doing the Born To Run album/show  tonite.  L.U.C.K.Y…D.U.C.K.S. !!!

This was a s~l~o~w concert year.  Only one Springsteen show when he opened his tour.  The guy needs to come back.  We didn’t get U2 tickets but we’ll worry about that closer to showtime in June (they’re doing stadiums).

These two littles grew up rockin’ to The Boss (and Bono..The Doors..and more)…and they will see him for the first time tonite.  I’m excited for them.

And jealous.  Green with envy.  *sigh*

Thinking Ahead Cuz Time…It Goes By FAST !!

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Tuesday 17 November 2009 9:17 pm

I tried to find chicken wings at the grocery store yesterday and they moved it.  In it’s place..there were turkeys and more turkeys.  It’s that time of year!!  I have to clear out my fridge to make room.  It’s REALLY time to think of what’s around the corner.

To that end ~ I’m thinking of one of my favorite things to do this time of year and that’s our holiday cards, and no, I’m not doing email this year.  I want to stay traditional as I love receiving cards from friends.  I’m going to check out Paper Culture which I was referred to by the Juice Box Jungle (see their cool widget on the top right of my blog!).  Take ‘em up on their limited time discount too!!  Paper Culture is currently offering a $15.00 discount (promo code: NOEL) and free shipping if you order by November 30.

I’m loving their Holiday Photo Cards and since I’ve been having the time of my life with my camera this year, I think I’m going to spend some time looking for that perfect shot that I’ll want to share with friends and family.

I’m getting excited…first for the turkey…and then for the man with the ho ho ho!!

I Refuse To Grow Up

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Tuesday 17 November 2009 6:49 pm
I will always believe.
Santa Claus.  He is alive and well in my heart and my mind.  Goes back to my early early childhood. Christmas was always one of the happiest days for me as a child.  I have vivid memories of our holiday traditions.  Writing our letters.  I always asked for a doll and I always named her Roberta.
Our holidays were all about family.  On the eve of Christmas, my grandfather would host the entire clan (about 150 people) in his home at a little before midnite.  It was a noche buena celebration which included a roasted pig and tons of food.  I would see my cousins (first and second) and aunts and uncles. There were always new babies. It was festive and we wouldn’t get home till about 3AM.  Late for a child.  When we got home, we went straight to bed because we knew Santa could be coming if we slept and were quiet.
On Christmas morning, he filled our living room with a LOT of toys.  LOTS.  Gleeeeeee!
When I had my own family, it was natural for me to give my children the same kind of Christmas I had. Traditionally, my mom and I would shop together the first Monday after Thanksgiving.  I always took that day off and we would hunt for the hottest gift.  Cabbage Patch Dolls, Teddy Ruxpin (!!), Furby (??), New Kids on the Block (!!), Pokemon (!!!). I wouldn’t buy one..I would get two.  I would finish the shopping on that day and spend the early evening wrapping at mom’s and leaving it there.  On Christmas Eve, she would bring them to my house where we had our family dinner and leave it in the garage.  Santa would arrive when the kids were asleep.
My children NEVER asked me if Santa was real.  They knew better than that.
Now they get to carry the tradition and keep the magic alive.  Nathan will be able to understand it this year, he’s two. Alyssa will have her turn under the holiday lights.  I can’t wait.  I’m looking forward to bundling up with my most favorite people in the world and giving thanks for being able to love on two beautiful babyGRANDS. This time, I’m not the one in charge.  I get to watch  with pride and with a very warm heart.
I will always see the holidays from the eyes of a child.  I will never grow up.  I have my memories tucked in the warmest corner of my heart and want my children and their children to have the same warm and cozy family love as I did.  It really doesn’t get better than that.
Don’t you just love this time of the year?

Cool Gift Finds – Holiday 2009

Posted by TGD | GrammieMommy Finds,cool gifts,craftsbury kids,custom | Tuesday 17 November 2009 4:13 am

I was browsing the net earlier this evening looking for unique gifts for the holidays.  I think I’ve mentioned it a few times that I enjoy the ‘hunt’ and challenge of finding cool one of a kind gifts online.  I found this cool site that had some really crafty gifts.

The online store is called Craftsbury Kids and in particular I saw these two items that I wanted to share with you.  (Disclosure:  not affiliated in any way. Just found them and want to pass on the info).

These are custom silhouette pillows.  You send them your photograph and you can choose the color of the silhouette and the background and can even personalize the print.  Takes 3 weeks (lead time) so you still have time if you want this on someone’s tree!

I also thought this was neat.  They’re custom dolls for boys.  You can choose features and clothing colors. Kind of like American Girl (for girlies).  This one will be your little boy’s best bud.  Lead time is also 3 weeks.

How’d I find these?  Well, lets just say that I’ve gotten around the interwebz lately and am having the funnest time discovering treasures.  Don’t worry..I’ll share my finds with you.  It’s what I love to do anyway.

Better get your lists to Santa ready!  Okay, gotta run..Monday wasn’t so bad after all!

Early Christmas Hot Stuff?

This shirt actually plays the guitar!  All images and data available at ThinkGeek.com

Wearable ROCK!

Here at ThinkGeek were just wishing for a fully playable guitar built into a t-shirt when along came the Pixie of ROCK… she wailed with face melting guitar solo and *POOF* there it was in our hands… The Electronic Rock Guitar Shirt. We turned on the mini amp, cranked the volume to 11 and started to rock. As the Pixie explained, the Electronic Guitar Shirt is incredibly easy to play because each button on the neck is a major chord. She went on to mention how you can play dozens of classic rock songs with very little skill. However she warned us never to use the Guitar Shirt for evil lest, we are prepared to summon the Demon of Rock and duel to the death for musical supremacy.

chord guide

Now you can purchase one of these fine Electronic Rock Guitar Shirts and get a little wearable ROCK magic for yourself. The Electronic Guitar Shirt is not a toy that plays pre-canned musical riffs, it is a real musical instrument that allows you to play your favorite songs and sound great doing it. All major chords are recorded from a real electric guitar, and the included magnetic pick allows you to strum just like you would a real guitar. The included mini amp clips to your belt and gets plenty loud with great sounding amplification circuitry. The tone knob on the amp lets you adjust the sound just like a real guitar.

                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Disclosure:  I’m not affiliated with this company, nor have I purchased this item.  I just came across it and thought it was really cool.  I’ve bought stuff from this company before and my son had fun with ‘em.   I’m hoping he doesn’t ask me for one of this for Christmas.
Traveling The World Vicariously Through My Sister
UPDATE:
She landed safely.  But the ordeal was not over. There was one more FB Update:
“Landed fine but crazy foul-mood @$&*#& cab driver spun the cab on merger from airport to freeway. Stopped in middle of freeway to check tires-thought were flat. Not only did he not want to carry my small bag into his trunk, but didn’t wanna take it off either. So..he got no tip. When I took my bag out, I didn’t bother closing his trunk, el cabron. Aside from freaky cab drivers, trip was fruitful.”
Welcome home, sis!
☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺
My SisterDearest still works corporate.  She’s a   director of Marketing for a firm.  She is also raising two teenagers, alone. One just turned 14 yesterday.  And a doggie.  In the last few months, she has been in about 20 different flights, maybe more.  I tried to track her journeys on a map but quit, cuz she’s literally all.over.the.map.
California. Spain. Beijing. Manila. Seoul. Hongkong.  London. Montreal. Phoenix. Mexico. Paris. Hyderabad.
Her Facebook profile is a plane going east or west depending on the direction of her journey.  When she’s home it shows her basking in the sun (her wishful thinking and the kind of stuff we allow ourselves when she is here and has a weekend to spare). When she needs to breathe, she might call and we go find water to sit next to, and get back to earth.
Facebook Derivatives
She’s currently on her way home from Europe and has been sharing through Facebook:
  “So…..earlier this year I raved about the Virgin Lounge at Heathrow. Now I’m ranting about the United Lounge at Heathrow. Let’s just say both reflect the service and sophistication of both airlines. One overflows and the other is remarkably, appalingly lacking. (Sigh)”
 And these:
“Is now in Paris for dinner and all day work tomorrow. I’m so tired even my hair hurts….”
“Ohmigod the driver of my car from hotel to Heathrow needs to shut up!! He’s giving me second by second report of his past trips to the US 20 years ago. Help!!!”
And this (still with her sense of humor intact)
“Just got this from a friend: Secret to enjoying a good bottle of wine: 1. Uncork and allow it to breathe. 2. If it doesn’t breathe, give it mouth to mouth. :)
I am traveling the world vicariously through her.  Maybe you will too.  Since she can’t chronicle her whereabouts…I am sure she’d allow me to track it for her.
Palma de Mallorca, Spain (jealous me)
And the colors of the world through her eyes.
HDR Photography ~ for Dummies ☺
Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Saturday 14 November 2009 11:55 pm
I am not a professional photographer.  There, I disclosed.  I’m not good at being mediocre, though.  I’m either into something 100% or not into it at all.  Ask my mom..I’m an all or nothing kind of gal.
So since June of this year, I’ve been enhancing my skilllllz and trying to master this Canon 50D of mine and the four five lenses that I we have.  I say ‘we’ because my son has taken it up, too.  And just like other things gadget-y, he’s much better than me and has mastered it.
So my kid set my camera up so I can take HDR pictures.  High Dynamic Range if you’re not into acronyms.  You can check out Google on the definition, but if you’re the lazy kind..then HERE, I’ll save you a click.  Basically I have a custom setting (C1 on my Canon) and when I take a photo, it generates 3 photographs in varying luminances like these below.  Yeah click, click, click in rapid fashion.
Now as you can see..none of these don’t look really good by themselves.  Sure you can fix these individually in Lightroom or Photoshop but you want to bring out the color and all the highlights and shadows and make the photo come alive. That’s where Photomatix Pro comes in.  You can read all about it in the link.  These three photos I took today are straight out of the camera, unretouched.
I uploaded these three to Photomatix…see the three files on the right. That’s the 3 RAW files converted to JPG.
Then I hit “OK” and “Generate HDR Image” ~  the software crunches all three photographs (pardon my non techie language, the pictures are being cooked).
Boiling…let it cook s’more
Almost done, finishing touches..I just sit and wait (less than a minute)
Chromatic aberrations..uh huh.  Really? Makes you feel smart.
Initially, this is what you’ll see.  Whoa, right?  No prob. Just hit “Tone Mapping”
You’ll get controls like this to fix your image
Now this is where YOU (I) have control.  You move these sliders till you think you have an exquisite image exactly to your liking.  Kind of like Salt and Pepper to taste.
Hit PROCESS and then SAVE the image…voila!!
Just like 20/20 Clear Vision!
You may click to enlarge
Now, dontcha love it?
And there you go!  My (hideous) first photography tutorial in plain kitchen jargon that any layperson or cook can understand.  Thanks for reading!  This is how I learned it and if I can do it, so can you (and so can your Yay Grammie)!
Got questions?  Uhhhhm…okay, leave it here or comment..and I’ll have my techie geeky smart patient and cool 23 year old son reply to you.  Cuz me…I’m more hands on than reading instructions.  But I do cookbooks!
Love thy camera.
Inhaling
Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Saturday 14 November 2009 9:42 pm
GDaddy (aka Sickman / GrammieDaddy) was feeling a little better today and needed a little outing.  Fortunately, since the sun decided to make an appearance after the night and morning rain, we decided to go for a little drive to our fave pizza joint in Alameda (LaVals).  I ordered their special, to go.  We had Newman with us and he kind of liked being able to sniff around which is what he did with GD while I waited for our food.
We went to the  neighborhood with huge gigantic maple trees but they’re not turning the right color yet, still some green.  I imagine it won’t be till the middle of November that I’ll see the yellows and firey reds.  Still, the clean and crisp fall air was just what our lungs needed, so we dug it.  Inhaled it, in fact…riding in the car with the windows down so Newman could stick his little face out and bask in the wind.
Happy to be out and about!
Duck watching
Furball sitting on top of the world truck
watching the world go by
Yeah, I’m cute!
For the rest of the afternoon, I’m working on a graphic file for a Monday project and then I need to get down and domesticated.   Where’s Gus Gus when you need him!
Oh, and while I’m on the subject of inhaling..I need to take a really deep breath because my niece, who I swear was just a little kid a while ago, turns 14 today.  Hard to fathom. Sister, dear…good luck and I’ll be there for you!
Happy Birthday Buddy Girl.  Stop melting ♥♥s
This Is Ourselves. Under Pressure
Posted by TGD | my thoughts | Saturday 14 November 2009 4:10 pm
Bowie  / Gail Ann Dorsey 2004 – I was there
Pressure pushing down on me
Pressing down on you no man ask for
Under pressure – that burns a building down
Splits a family in two
Puts people on streets
Um ba ba be
Um ba ba be
De day da
Ee day da – that’s o.k.
It’s the terror of knowing
What this world is about
Watching some good friends
Screaming ‘Let me out’
Pray tomorrow – gets me higher
Pressure on people – people on streets
Chippin’ around – kick my brains around the floor
These are the days it never rains but it pours
People on streets – ee da de da de
People on streets – ee da de da de da de daIt’s the terror of knowing
What this world is about
Watching some good friends
Screaming ‘Let me out’
Pray tomorrow – gets me higher high high
Pressure on people – people on streets
Turned away from it all like a blind man
Sat on a fence but it don’t work
Keep coming up with love
but it’s so slashed and torn
Why – why – why ?
Love love love love love
Insanity laughs under pressure we’re cracking
Can’t we give ourselves one more chance
Why can’t we give love that one more chance
Why can’t we give love give love give love give love
give love give love give love give love give love
‘Cause love’s such an old fashioned word
And love dares you to care for
The people on the edge of the night
And love dares you to change our way of
Caring about ourselves
This is our last dance
This is ourselves
Under pressure
We had a good thing going, for the most part.  How we found ourselves there isn’t what is or was important.  It was the good we were able to bring out in each other that brought all of us to front and center stage.
We cared.  About many people. Never regretted.
Post Mortem.
The voyeurs have been kind, shy and courteous to me.  I appreciate that.  All were sweet.  They are no longer nameless. They were drawn to everyone’s stories.   We weren’t  entertainment.  We were lives intertwined.  Polar forces meeting in the middle and getting along, for the most part. They watched and liked what they saw. But not the venom.  They don’t do poison. At least not the ones who now have names.
To many we were avatars. Mine was a peace sign.  That’s just the way I always was.
That’s what I’ll always be.
We received my niece’s Save The Date invite yesterday.  Wedding next spring.  A destination wedding to be exact.  And if you couldn’t make it to the wedding, they would get married for us all over again in Connecticut.
I just gave the invitation due diligence and looked online.
Destination:
The Dominican Republic
And this.
Now..what do I do!!!
Yes I Did ☺ Friday!
Posted by TGD | yes i did friday | Friday 13 November 2009 10:42 pm
As started by Jeanette, Yes I Did Friday allows us to end our work week by sharing our  achievements  (if any).  This week was a doozy  Doozy.  You are welcome to join our blog carnival, grab the image from Jeanette’s site and link your story with those of us participating.
My week?  It was a roller coaster.  Alls I’m saying.
However:
  • I did take Wednesday off from 11AM ~ 8PM to spend with four of my favorite people in the world. It was like being in Disneyland ~ no cares in the world whenever I get to hold, hug, squeeze and smell my little babyGRANDS.
  • I did assume the roll of Florence Nightingale all.week.long.  Add to that the Laundry Fairy, Kitchen Queen, Domestic Housekeeper and  Dog Walker.  Mr. GrammieDaddy better get well soon.
  • I did manage to work my tail all week, including while I was out with the kids and kidlets on Wednesday. I was tempted to leave communication devices at home.
  • I did share a special ice cream treat with my 2yo (Nate).  I am happy to share with you that he totally understands what brain freeze is.
  • I did rejoin Blog Frog after having it dormant for a month.  I am glad I gave it a second chance. It’s all good.  From me, I hope you’ll be able to see (and reap) the benefits.
  • I did let positive energy run my life all.week.long.  In spite of.  And it served me well.
