Shooting Stars

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Tuesday 29 September 2009 6:17 pm

A few years ago, my husband (we weren’t married at the time) and I spent a fabulous weekend up in the mountain in Arnold, CA.  We stayed at the Yellow Dog Inn which was right in front of the golf course, and the 17th hole, to be exact.  It was one of our favorite getaways since it was an easy 2 hour drive and we could fish in the summer and enjoy the snow in the winter.

This particular weekend, we found out that the Perseid showers were happening that night.  I’d never really seen a shooting star.  I wasn’t one to really look up in the sky and stare.  So we decided we’d watch.  And boy.. did we see a spectacular show!  Three – four – five at a time, every few seconds in front of us, behind us and in our peripheral vision.  We laid our picnic blanket by the flag of the 17th hole and said WOW over and over again.

The sky was clear, we were up in the mountains with no lights.  A thousand shooting stars!  It was incredible and we felt so small in the vastness of the universe. We were giddy like kids watching our first fireworks.  The shooting stars went left, right, up ~ everywhich way.  For hours!  We spent two hours watching.  I’ve never seen anything like it.  And we felt like we were meant to be there, to watch.  It was a moment we’ll never forget.

And the last two nights, my husband wanted me to remember.  We didn’t take pictures that night ~ but he had the image in his mind.  I found this on my office door this morning ~ he left it for me to find because he knew it would make me smile.

I made many wishes that night.  And a year later, I married the man.  And we are happily ever after-ing.

Stove Top Paella – The Recipe

Posted by TGD | recipes paella | Tuesday 29 September 2009 12:08 am

I’ve been asked by a few people to share the easy recipe for my stovetop paella – so here it is!  Just remember that this is the lazy way to make this favorite spanish dish.

You will need a paellera (paella pan) or a wide, shallow skillet.

My ingredients:
5 1/4c fish stock or water (with Knorr Fish Broth cubes), or Chicken Broth
12 large raw shrimp in their shells
1/2 tsp saffron threads (I use a generous pinch)
Cut up roasted chicken (my lazy way)
Salt and Pepper
3 tbsp olive oil
2 cut up Spanish chorizo sausage (El Rey brand)
1/2 chopped onion
4 pcs crushed garlic (I use about 6)
Dash of paprika
Cherry tomatoes (I used canned sliced or regualar chopped up tomatoes)
1 1/2 cups paella rice (I used Jasmine, you can use any)
Optional: seeded and sliced red/green pepper
Optional: cubed pork tenderloin

1. In a large pan bring the stock to a simmer then add the shrimp, cook for 2 minutes. Transfer the shrimp to a bowl and set it aside. Put the saffron threads and some of this water water in a small bowl and let this infuse for a while (can ya smell it?)

2.  Heat the oil in the paella pan and saute the garlic then the onions.  Brown the tenderloin if you have it.  Add the chorizo and then the cut up chicken. Add the bell peppers, paprika and the saffron and it’s soaking liquid.

3. Mix and stir in the rice till it’s glossy and coated. Add the fish stock or water (you can use chicken broth).

Don’t stir while this is cooking.  Let this cook for about 10 minutes till the rice grains are plump and almost cooked.

Add the peeled shrimp on top and shake the pan, but do not stir. Simmer for another 10 minutes.  Enjoy!

Finding Cool Things

Posted by TGD | rollabana lunchbox | Monday 28 September 2009 8:10 pm

I found some cool products that I would never have found if not for belonging to a group of fellow mom bloggers and supporting each other’s blogs.  Today I visited Tina’s blog and came across a cool site with items for young children.  And guess what!  I ordered from them!  I would put the information on here but what I ordered is going under the Christmas tree so you’ll have to wait till after Santa arrives.

Those ads you see on our blogs can really help you find some good stuff!  Coupons, even! And stuff you don’t see in stores!  Cool Finds!  The stuff grammie likes to look for!

Ya know..tie-dyed grammie!

That’s all the hint you’re gonna get.

And if you think I’m just playing..I also sold some of these Rollabanas for a school cheering squad that needed them ‘yesterday’ !!  So yeah, I’m working..and making things happen.

And making smiles.  Cuz that what I like to see. Lots of smiles, and happy people.  It’s really not a hard thing to do.

So Peace – and flower power and love – to all of you.

Quickie Sunday Visit

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Monday 28 September 2009 2:03 am

Quickie visit to see the littles today.  We watched the Niners game – which was good till Brett Favre mustered all his years of experience and everything he had in him to throw the WINNING touchdown!  Boo!  But I can’t not like Favre.  So..uhhm..yeah. Go Niners!

I really just went to get a whiff of my little darlings!  Nate the Great was there for the game and then went with daddy to go visit the other set of GRANDparents.  But first, he had to finish his lunch and sit and behave.  He is learning his table manners early.

And Alyssa..well.. she’s thriving and growing.  More alert and can follow now. Still ever so yummylicious.

I mean…can I just eat this little girl and squeeeeeze her?  Doesn’t she look like ICE CREAM??

Wait….did someone mention a football game today?  Uh…yeah, I watched (kind of).  I know the guys did.
Us girls, well..we just stared at a baby…and talked of vacationing somewhere … and I ordered more Partylite candles…and we talked about girlie things.   You know ~ life stories.
Where’d my Sunday go!

My Sundays Past, Family Traditions

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Sunday 27 September 2009 4:53 pm

Sundays always meant family for me.

When I was growing up, it was the same weekly routine.  We would go to mass with my parents.  We wore dresses to church (pants not allowed yet).  And if any one of us forgot our veils at home, we had to turn around to get it.  The church would be packed and we knew almost everyone there.

After church, we would visit my grandparents home for canapes and then lunch.  Caviar, smoked salmon, crackers.  I had no idea caviar was expensive.  I just liked popping them between my teeth.  Ten years old and loving caviar…and sangria.

Lunch?  It was always at least 5 courses, sometimes more and my grandparents had a cook who was simply the best.  Her name was Nieves. She was with them forever!

When we went to my Grandmas home (my mom’s mom)..she too had the best cook named Carmen..who also became part of the family!  Gosh, I miss all their specialties.

Paella – a family favorite

Living in America, we’ve tried to keep our family Sunday traditions but it’s a whole different lifestyle here. We’re usually pooped from the work week and resting up for Monday.  We don’t have our master chefs to prepare our yummy meals.  When my sister is in town, we try to get together at her house since she likes to keep this tradition going.  Perhaps when she returns from her two week work trip.  I so miss it.

Because Sundays should be family days.  It’s what we did. And our family is growing and we need to set traditions for the young ones.

Do you have traditions that have been past down the generations?

Collecting Memories

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Saturday 26 September 2009 11:57 pm

Before Ticketmaster went high tech and begun issuing tickets by email, we collected all our ticket stubs from our concerts. Put together, it reminds us of the FUN we had watching some REALLY COOL shows! Bowie, The Who, Neil Young, Clapton, McCartney, The Stones, Springsteen!  This was only the beginning! We collected hats and tshirts from all the shows - until we started making the t-shirts ourselves!

Sometimes – low tech is more fun!

Here are just ‘some’ of the tickets we’ve collected.   They’re in a shadow box now, along with a few other souvenirs. I’m giving my age away here, aren’t I !!

Do you collect memorables too?  Feel free to share your collectibles with  me!

Itty Bitty One Month

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Saturday 26 September 2009 6:43 pm

We celebrated Alyssa’s first month of precious existence in our lives yesterday. It really feels like she was just born yesterday..and yet, I find myself wondering where she was my whole life.  GRANDchildren come into our lives and ‘just fit right in’.  Don’t they?

Mommy and Mini-Me
Our family was whole..all the siblings, all the parents, all the BFFs.  The new family is loved and it showed.  I don’t think I’ve seen a more relaxed new family.

Mommy #2
Did I tell you that we have a little doll?  Well, we do.  And it’s a lot of fun to play dress up.  Mommy AND daddy are having a blast choosing the day’s outfit and on a typical day at home, she’s known to change into a few different ensembles that match.  Down to the shoes.  Oh..yes, the shoes.  She’s set for life on shoes (check out blog below).

If you want to check out Alyssa’s first professional photo shoot, please visit Connie Sithi Photography and check out some of the really cool pictures she took.

Celebrations!
We are a celebration-y family.  We like to come together to celebrate little things.  Or just being together and seeing the littles grow.  Any excuse, we’ll take it.  We’re making memories and capturing as much of it as we can.  First cake done.  Eleven more to go.

We’re Four Weeks Old!

Posted by TGD | Alyssa | Friday 25 September 2009 1:34 am

Tomorrow (Friday), we will be celebrating Alyssa’s First Monthsary.  And we’re having cake!

What a fast four weeks it has been!  And the little itty boo has been pretty much behaving herself!  A little bit of mixed up days and nights, but for the most part, she’s a happy camper!

Little baby girl, so much joy you bring to many people’s lives.
The new family took their first outing today and went to Stanford mall.  Her Facebook status said that it took them 3 hours to get out of the house.  And the little one had a jacket on (it wasn’t cold).  That’s because momma is a nurse and knows everything about viruses.  Ayayay!
We are planning a photoshoot with the two kiddies because there’s this Baby Gap contest we want to join. It just sounds like fun.  I bought black and white backgrounds and hopefully will be able to shoot some good photos this weekend.  Outdoors too.  But you know, with momma and the ‘germs’ thing..we’ll see how far ‘outside’ we get.
I can’t wait for cake.  You’ll see it here tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Out Damn Hotspot!

Posted by TGD | puppy hotspot e-collar | Friday 25 September 2009 12:15 am

It was a fairly normal workday for me.  Started off early and progressed to some transactions and approvals and all the other innuendos that come with the life of a WAHG (work at home grammie).  Then a neighbor came by to chat and I greeted him at the door together with my puppy, Newman.

Then I noticed this :(   … totally BOO!

Oh no!  His FIRST hotspot!  Of course, I was horrified!

The neighborly chat went well, a 15 minute visit since he ‘was’ a neighbor but he moved to Berkeley and regularly checks up on his house next door which is being rented (he’s a tad meticulous about his lawn).  Immediately after he left, I took Newman to the vet and yes, indeed, a hotspot.

He got a cortisone shot and another shot of an antibiotic..and this damn e-collar that he’ll have to wear for a week.

He didn’t want to move!
I had to coax my poor pup to move..and that it would be alright.  But he was so sad looking and wierded out. Can you tell?

Hopefully, these onesies will do the job for now.  I got some 9-12 month baby sized ones but they’re tight :(   My doggie grew!

He’s still pretty sad (or maybe he’s groggy from the shots he got).
So…how did you spend $130.00 today?  I just told you where mine went!  Darn HOTspot!!

Random Acts of Kindness

Posted by TGD | Uncategorized | Thursday 24 September 2009 9:36 pm

Raise your hand if you think there is so much negativity in the world these days.  On the television and newspapers. Online and IRL.  Don’t you wish there was a magazine that only had GOOD NEWS!

I recently joined a group of mostly women (few men), some with health and life issues, but all very caring and compassionate.  Regardless of how this group formed, the basic hearts of all it’s members was good.

Yesterday was our first Random Act of Kindness day in memory of Olivia Grace, a little child who passed away too soon.  One of the members had a health issue and out of the blue, 2 others came to assist her. One member had bought a new laptop and sent her old one to T.  Another member found a hospital bed to be delivered and made all the arrangements for it.

I have always been a believer in paying it forward.  Running a business allows me to help people – and it never fails that I am in one way or another always blessed.

I have faith in people.  Regardless of what I see, hear and read.  Did you do something special for someone? Trust me, good will find a way back to you.

Football Sunday

Work has kept me busy the last two days but I wanted to post some photos I took this Sunday. We spent the day with All My Children and the two little babes. It was a typical football Sunday – our 49ers were playing and my SIL was actually at the game. Lucky. But that didn’t deter my girls from cooking up a storm.

And the best part of the day was that for the 2nd day in a row…I had both GRANDchildren in one home.

We even brought our year old pup with us. Uhhhm he drove the last mile for us.

DailyShots (663 of 1)

Just kidding! We wouldn’t do THAT!

It was a relaxing day, we were there till about 7:30pm and then headed for home. Hubby and pup were pooped, in fact..Newman (the pup) crashed in my husband’s arm all the way home. He was chasing and running around with a 2 year old all day. At home, he’s pretty laid back since I’m usually working during the day and his play time is after 6pm.

2009-09-22_1218I think I forgot how fun a toddler can be and how smart they can get. And how they can have a conversation with you. And think they know everything. Nate can already spell his name! I had given him a book with his name spelled out. It’s from I See Me and his mom has read it to him since he was little. He recognizes the letters in his whole name. Baby Alyssa will get the Fairy Tale one ~ the little princess!

Come to think of it ~ anyone realize that we’ll soon be seeing holiday decorations in stores in the next few weeks? This has been a very fast year, indeed…and I think waiting for our little girl to arrive has made it go by faster, especially the last couple months ~ with our weekly Wednesday lunches.

When Nate was born, we celebrated ‘monthsaries’ and would have a party with cake and candles every month. As he grew, he got to appreciate the social gathering and kept getting closer and closer to enjoying the Cake-of-the-month. He had a hey-day digging into his first REAL birthday cake.

We’re doing the monthsaries again and next Friday, Alyssa will be a whole month old! Wow!

Family day! We like to get together for the simplest of reasons. It’s awesome to LIKE your children. I highly recommend it.

I have a feeling I’m going to have a third GRANDchild by next year. We’ll see. More to love! I cannot complain about anything.

Life is kind. I’m grateful.

Bragging Rights

Happy Sunday everyone. I spent a bit of my Saturday visiting my new GRANDdaughter..and in the afternoon got a surprise visit from my 2 year old GRANDson! Bonus! Happy me!

Alyssa had her first official photoshoot last week with budding professional photographer. At the teeny tender age of 3 weeks, she’s already a pro. The photoshoot lasted four hours! I hope to share the photographs and the site as soon as the pictures are ready.

Lucky me..I have free access..so with that..can I just brag for a bit? I took some shots from yesterday.

DailyShots (637 of 1)

My daughter and I were just totally moving her around here and she was sleeping and in REM, not minding all the fuss about her. What a trooper.

DailyShots (639 of 1)

Nathan is harder to photograph now..such an active toddler, he was dancing the whole time, or swinging his baseball bat.

DailyShots (647 of 1)

We were cue-ing up a YouTube video of a Black Eyed Peas flash mob dance performance that he’s watched over and over and has memorized (words and moves). It’s pretty cool, and fun to watch with a two year old copying the moves.

Simple Saturday with the children..and then it was back home for me to try some of the recipes I found on the Real Simple magazine I mentioned on another post. Lovely day!

REALLY Rewinding

I’m staying on the REWIND subject this morning. I mean REALLY rewinding to some (okay, many) moons ago in another lifetime in another country. My life pre-children, pre-boyfriends or husband(s). Just Me.

Growing up location: The Philippines

I was very sheltered, went to an all girl school with 3 of my siblings. We were dropped off by in our car by a driver and a yaya (endearing term for nanny). Our school was run by French nuns and the same school location went all the way from Kindergarten to College. Yup, one school…all girls.

We had twelve (yes 12) household helpers: a cook, a lavandera (laundry woman), a nanny, 3 housegirls, 2 drivers, a houseboy, 1 guard and 2 bodyguards. There were 6 of us in our family and a cousin of ours lived with us. Oh and three times a week, a seamstress would be in our home sewing all our clothes. We got to design them and she (or we) would buy the material. I miss her!

I didn’t do any housework. Heck, I didn’t know how to comb my hair for a long time. I would wake up each morning with my school uniform ready to put on. My yaya put my socks on while I was asleep. I brushed my teeth and washed my face and sat in a chair while my hair was braided. She carried my school bag for me. For all of us.

We came home from school for our lunch break. Driver and nanny (yaya) would pick us up in school. Full lunch with 4 courses and a 15 minute break and it was back to school for afternoon sessions. We were picked up again at 4:15pm (school started at 7:20am).

Dinner was with the whole family. Food was served on your left side and plates removed from the right side. Soup first, then rice, a meat dish, a fish dish and a vegetable dish. And then dessert. And conversation. Always conversation. We were all opinionated. Many times the topic was political..or legal..or current events. If you left the table it had to be for a good reason, but you had to excuse yourself.

It was handy to have so many people in the house. We would play badminton with the guards. Or basketball. And our table tennis area was where most of my most memorable teenage years were spent. With all the boys who came to hang out, from two all-boy rival schools. After school, there were 2 loaves of sandwiches prepared because we would come home and friends would always come by. Always. Everyday. In retrospect…DANG, my parents fed a LOT of people!

In our bedrooms, we had a buzzer that we would use to ring for a maid to come. We had codes (kind of like morse code) for who we wanted. I’d buzz them when I wanted a glass of water. Or freshly made juice. Or a hamburger sandwich or tuna. I miss the buzzer.

Our laundry woman would HAND wash our clothes early in the morning. She would squat and wash and hang ‘em out to dry. Then she would rest. In the afternoon she would iron everything. Including our underwear. No washer/dryer. No Bounce or Downy. Just a stick she would use to soften some clothes and starch to make some of them stiff (like our uniform skirts). And she would put everything back. Folded, perfect. Do I miss her? Heck YEAH!!

Our cook went to the market every other day. We had full lunch and dinner and breakfast on weekends. They would deliver live white leghorn chickens (I’ll skip the prepping chicken part) Fish was always fresh. And vegetables…daily!

We had three ‘housegirls’ who cleaned, dusted, waxed floors and polish them. They swept, and swept and dusted all day. After us..always cleaning up after us. I miss them. I’d take one right now.

My dad worked with the government for a while so we had body guards and a guard at our gate. In my teen years, we befriended then and bribed them to change their logs so our parents would not know what time we REALLY came home.

Because we lived such a sheltered life, in my senior year I was ‘plucked’ by my mom and placed with a foster family in San Jose, CA to spend my last year of high school on a Youth For Understanding Exchange program. I was rather shy growing up..but I was placed with the most outgoing FUN outdoor-sy family. I returned with tie dye and flower power in my mind, the hippie in me was born (still is in my soul).

And then one day, I grew up. One by one we all got married.

DailyShots (636 of 1)As my cousin’s Bridesmaid

And then I got married..and then children. With my small family, I only had a nanny and one other helper. But I gave all that up, packed up and moved to the good old USA. The do-it-yourself country.

I had to learn how to boil water. I learned that eggs exploded. I couldn’t for the life of me cut up a chicken. I had to learn how to eat light for lunch (no more 4 course meals). Heck, I had to gut fish! I had to think about what was for dinner the night before I went to bed. But I DID IT!!

And I drove on American freeways and got me from Point A to Point B (another story someday).

I did it! My children, all three of them..are kind, smart and best friends. I survived their peer pressures and love their friends.

Life changed me, though. But I am in a good place. I oftentimes tell my husband that many of my life skills were learned from watching all our household helpers do their thing. In retrospect, I just had to cummulatively emulate them so I could run my own household. I did not lift a finger growing up.

Now I have dishpan hands.

But heck….I appreciated the help. At least I know I had it good for a while. I love my life then…but I love it more now. My life is much more low key.

It’s all good. I keep it very simple and that’s my key to success.

Looking Back (Rewind)

I had a few posts from a blog I started in 2007 when Nathan was born. To consolidate that blog into this, allow me to post the entries from that site into this one, including the pictures I had posted.

Let’s Give ‘Em Something To Talk About

Posted August 26, 2007 on Blogger

Hello Blogspot! Hello untouchable space and bloggosphere.

Herein lies the creation and the beginning of the Grammi Diaries – the daily rants and raves of a boomer grandparent , in search of an alternative nomenclature / noun / descriptive word to replace that somewhat repulsive ‘cross-over’ word…GRANDMA. While it means an achievement in life and longevity…it brings to my mind momma in muumuu , and I am not ready for that. It will be my take on life as a mother of a new mother and the most amazing feeling of being grandparental. If no one ever prepared you for this experience…the good and the bad, the hilarious and the oops poops moments, then I will share my stories with you. It is a brand new world and a new journey into my unknown.

This is my head and my heart writing. Sometimes, the two are not in sync, so I beg your forgiveness right here and now.

Of course, like every tale…it will begin with once upon a time on 8/9/07…

This is my story. We will live happily ever after.

Crossing Over

Posted August 28, 2007

What’s in a name. Grandma, Oma, Avo, Abuelita, Abuela, Lola, Mamma, Mia….names, titles, rank?

I don’t know who I feel like. It’s one of the above, or none of the above. I am a grandmother and I lived to see my grandson. With Divine Intervention, I will live to watch him play ball one day, run the bases or throw a pass. He was born on August 9 and on that day, life as I knew it changed. He was born when we least expected and anticipated. Two days after his due date. We were so ready for him..but we could never have comprehended how wonderful it would be.

He came rather easily – thank you, epidural. There was so much fanfare in the birthing room that it took me a moment to realize what had happened. I’ve crossed over! I am now someone’s grandmother. My child just delivered her first baby. Her life, her dream..I got to see it born.

The funny thing is, my aha moment came 10 minutes late! “I’m never gonna have to diet again!” was the first thing on my mind! “Someone’s gonna love me no matter what!”. No muumuus, though. But just enough reason for me to enjoy an extra serving of something ‘grandparental’……chocolate cake!

So today, August 27…for dinner, I had a serving of carrot cake and a serving of chocolate cake.

Ugh…I feel fat. I can’t cross over yet!

Beautiful Boy
(John Lennon)
Out on the ocean sailing away,
I can hardly wait,
To see you to come of age,
But I guess we’ll both,
Just have to be patient,
Yes it’s a long way to go,
But in the meantime,
Before you cross the street,
Take my hand,
Life is just what happens to you,
While your busy making other plans,
Beautiful, Beautiful,
beautiful, Beautiful Boy,

Birth & Babies, 21st Century

Posted August 28, 2007 on Blogger

So my youngest …the one that was forever a baby… turned 21 this year. Enough already…it’s time to relinquish the baby spotlight, right? Wrong! So NOT ready!! This 21st century grandmother is in for a real awakening. I thought I was prepared…eh!! Ding, ding, ding…wing it!!

Number One Rule? GOOGLE!! !! I remember distinctly learning everything about birth and babies from a book written by Dr. Spock (no NOT the one of the pointy ears). There were barely any real photographs in the book…mostly drawings of babies in utero and depictions of vaginal deliveries or c-sections. In those before days, if you saw a live birth on television, you watched it in between two fingers across your one open eye. I kind of just took everything in stride and per se (just like Catholic education).

Now, the Learning Channel has a daily show about Bringing Home Baby…so you pretty much know what can happen. But still…nothing prepares you for the real thing.

As we approach D-day my daughters and I spent a day each week dreaming about life with baby. We lunched (Cheesecake Factory WAS a fave). I realized I was just as infanticipating as my own kid. I forgot what to look out for! One day, it dawned on me that I needed a refresher course, so I went online to check out “Signs of Early Labor”.

E.L. Sign Number One: You clean your house, drawers, furnitures, etc. In our instance, it was their garage. Apparently, it’s called “NESTING”. Huh???? I never nested! I remember maids washing clothes and me smelling the baby detergent. I do not remember cleaning a house. But, apparently…mammals do it. So do birds.

E.L. Sign Number Two: You’ll lose your mucous plug. Your WHAT? Google me to the rescue! It took but ten minutes to read everything there was to know and understand everyone’s blogged experience on losing it! “I lost my mucous plug two weeks ago and am still pregnant”. Why can’t they just say “you bleed”. Mucous plug sounds awful. “Did you look at it?”, I asked. Ok, so to those currently checking out ‘the plug’….it’s not time to check in yet, ok? You’re close, but not yet!

All this time, and to us it was a total of about 3 weeks of WAITING for the kettle to boil (and eating like it would be our last meal) I’m assuring my own kid that ”everything is alright”. (where’s the baby!! is only in my head…I could never say that out loud). I feel so dumb and I can’t show it. I have no clue what’s going on. Everything is ancient. Medicine is different. Doctor’s are too far advanced for this ancient boomerdang.

Maternal instinct to the rescue. Here I go into protective mode. I never admit my inadequacies. I, after all…am MOM!!

E.L. Sign Number Three. Braxton Hicks (not related to Toni Braxton) Contractions? Don’t panic. It’s not time to check in yet! Wait till they’re just a couple minutes closer! Walk the shopping malls, not the hospital halls!! I learn more things on Google. What the heck is being ‘effaced’ and where the heck in the body is -2 station? !! Hello!! It sounds like human body coordinates!! So, who’s navigating? Where’s the baby!!

As it turns out, and just like the days of our great great grandest parents, baby comes when baby’s ready. Tried and true tested. Forget the castor oil, forget the sex. If you dream it, they will come.

OCCASION: Delivery Day
LOCATION: Birthing Room.
DESCRIPTION: Mom is in her bed, hooked up. There is a living room for us lookie loos. There is a baby basinnet, weighing machine and everything baby will need
CAST OF CHARACTERS: MomToBe(of course!), DadToBe (yeah!), sister of the mom (excited), mom of the mom (still thinks she knows it all) and sister of the mom of the mom (party crasher and designated videographer), nurse (looks like Julia Roberts!), neonatologist, NICU doctor….and at the VERY LAST SECOND……The DOCTOR.

There are soooo many contraptions in the birthing room! Mom is strapped when we arrive with our own rendition of paparazzi in tow and our individual Venti Starbucks beverages. It is 530am. We see monitors for mom and baby’s heart…contraction indicators that look like a Richter Scale. I swear…technology, you have overcome me. “Mom, tell me when my contraction’s over”, she tells me, while twiddling her thumbs. She feels nothing. Incredible, 21st century pain free, spa-environmental birthing centers! Mommy can sleep in between contractions now. It was so easy!! In retrospect…I’m glad that it was difficult then. Or my 21 year old would not have been the youngest.

Ahhh…generation gap finally has it’s perks. Science, machines, medical technology. Birthing stress is nil. Pain is as tolerable as you can take it…or none. For baby number two, we are booking the manicurist.

If only they had a way to make the rest of life as comfortable, as ‘effaced’ and as zero station as possible. We’d be right on the money!

He’s such a happy boy!! and man, has he grown so fast! I get to see him tomorrow….yay!

THAT WAS THEN…. where did all that time go!

This little boy is now two years old. And still the love of my life.

I highly recommend GRANDchildren! In fact, if I had a medical degree…I would prescribe it!

Nathan and Alyssa August 2009

I know, I’m nuts. It’s 1am Saturday morning and I had said a million goodnights. Even my puppy is up since he already was asleep and saw me leave the bedroom I had gone in with the intention of reading the new issue of REAL SIMPLE magazine that caught my eye (i actually was salivating when I saw it). I’ve had this for 2 days and Friday night is usually when I like to sit back and read before crashing.

But there was so much in this issue!

DailyShots (635 of 1)

A whole month’s worth of shopping lists (4 weeks) and some of the most delicious QUICK (20 minutes) recipes with not too many ingredients. My kind of lifestyle cooking for two and not big leftover folks.

DailyShots (633 of 1)

You expect me to sleep soundly after reading this? !! I want to eat it. NOW!

DailyShots (634 of 1)

Photographic NOTES: Please don’t critique my pictures tonite. Their ‘noisy’ shot in high ISO cuz of the dim light in my room.

I am planning on perhaps the shrimp pot pie or a chicken dish for tomorrow. Maybe I’ll even buy some candles.

Oh man, where in the world is Ben & Jerry when you need that midnight munchie! C’est la vie. I will keep you posted. Do pick up a copy, it will be something you can keep along with your cookbooks.

Bon Apetit!

My doggie’s grooming costs more than mine. Sixty dollars. Yup, that’s how much Newman’s whopping day at the salon cost me! This is how I want him to look.

DailyShots-22

But at a certain point, I can’t control his hair from being matted. And I’m a bit OCD about that. My attempt at keeping him groomed fails me miserably at a certain hair length.

DailyShots (575 of 1)

Like this.

So it’s at this point (and length of facial hair) I debate when and whether to suck it up and give up my dinner money for doggie grooming. Six weeks, max..is when I succumb.

And for the money I get a poofy dog..with a ribbon in his head. A blue ribbon…cuz he’s a boy pup.

Someone is 3 weeks old today! Look how far we’ve come!

Can you tell I’m digging this all over again? This weekend I’ll have BOTH GRANDbabies. I’m so looking forward to that. You can’t imagine how blessed I feel and I’m going to enjoy every moment I can with them. Even if it’s for just a few minutes of any given day. I just need a little whiff … and then I’m good.

Accidental Photographer

I was able to capture two accidents today on our 880 freeway.

This morning, from Marina Boulevard getting onto 880 South, this big rig and little car met in the middle of the road. And you guessed it, the little car lost. I can’t really tell who’s fault this was but I would never try to outrun a big rig.

DailyShots (612 of 1)

And then on the way back up the same 880 freeway (headed north, this time), I encountered this EMS vehicle

DailyShots (614 of 1)

headed towards this rollover (yikes!)

DailyShots (613 of 1)

My stepbrother works for 911 in the city and sent me a message to make sure I had my hands on my wheel when I shoot these pictures. Don’t worry. I was going zero mph while I took all these shots.

Just another crazy day in California’s freeway! Careful out there!

Hello Thumb!

It didn’t take long for little Alyssa to find her thumb! Today was the day and guess what…she liked BOTH of them!

DailyShots (623 of 1)

Cute, you’d think for a less than 3 week old little baby..but before all this calm and happy cozy photo was taken, we had to deal with this :)

annapic

Yeah, really. My word! Someone was not happy. . . and needed a diaper change. I went during my lunch break. Mommy and daddy were smiling zombies trying to recover for being up all night..from 1am till about 6am.

DailyShots (619 of 1)

Most of the day…she’s just that… a CUTIE. And yes, I could squeeze her all day. Or rock her..and sing to her. Being GRAND is pretty sweet. Hope you are able to get there!

By Golly, I Got My Fix!

I missed my little GRANDbabies! Aside from busy with work, I was busy everywhere else with other priorities. But I fixed that today! Yippee! I mean..I got my fix today. My Baby Alyssa fix, that is (I still need to hug Nate soon). On the way to meet my husband for lunch today and pick up a copy of my blood test results (for file), I stopped by the kids to get a whiff off this little girlie girl.

DailyShots (605 of 1)

Lucky me! She was still in her jammies so I was able to give her a bath!

DailyShots (611 of 1)

Babies smell so good … like babies.

DailyShots (608 of 1)

She’s more awake and much more alert now (passed 2 weeks old). So I’m able to hug her, squeeze her, sing to her, kiss her and get my fix and my fill!

DailyShots (610 of 1)

And then give her some tummy time before I head on back to work. So sweet. I didn’t ask for much.

Tripping on Nature

On the long Labor Day weekend, we spent quite a bit of time bonding with family. A lunch at my sister’s home on Sunday and then a day trip to Half Moon Bay so I could practice taking some High Dynamic Range (HDR) photographs.

Of course, many people had the same idea of spending the day at beautiful Half Moon Bay! The traffic was s-l-o-w going! Both ways.

I wasn’t disappointed, though. I was able to take a few good shots.

HMB_HDR_1

Like these . . .

HMB_HDR_2

Or just a simple shot of winged creatures..bird on a wire, like this.

DailyShots (574 of 1)

We ate at Sam’s Chowder House and I had their signature Lobster Roll below. Yumm! (This was before the cholesterol results)

DailyShots (557 of 1)

Sometimes, I think how lovely it might be to spend a week in Hawaii. I forget that there are wonderful places just close by me in California that I could easily visit. I’m too close to the forest to see the trees. Must change that!

HMB_HDR_3

I’m looking forward to more Day Tripping!

Last week was a blur. My step dad was admitted for surgery for prostrate cancer. Ugh. I don’t like typing that “C” word. My sister passed away early at the tender age of 41 from pancreatic cancer. Way too early. My step dad’s blood test detected a high PSA count (Prostrate-Specific Antigen) and after more tests and probing, he was (and still is) hospitalized. It’s amazing how medical technology has advanced from 10 years ago when we were faced with that ‘monster’. I am hoping and praying that all goes well going forward. So far, the doctor said he was able to take everything and that it had not spread. Finger’s crossed for continued good news.

Hospitals give me the hibbie jibbies. I have all-too-fresh memories of spending 2 months on/off there with my mother-in-law earlier this year. But like everything in life, it was much easier for me to just roll with the punches and be supportive.

DailyShots (604 of 1)

So here’s a chart that the hospitals use – on a scale of 1 to 10..how much pain can you tolerate?

On another side note, I had my bloodwork done to check my organs and whatever else they can check for. Turns out that my cholesterol is a bit high and all that watermelon I’ve been enjoying all summer has made me borderline diabetic. This baby boomer is crossing over!! Not good. So, before the diet and sugar is watched…a little blueberry muffin on a Sunday morning at the hospital made my day.

DailyShots (602 of 1)

Now it’s not so blurry. Got the sugar and caffeine fix. Hip hip!

I’m A Big Kid Now

Our oldest GRANDchild just turned two..and until last week, he was little ~ or at least we thought he was little!

Yesterday when he came over to spend some time with the new parents (and new cousin), he suddenly seemed like a little big boy!

DailyShots (513 of 1)

He pretty much can tell you what he wants. Whether it be something simple as WATER or MILK. Cereal or ah-cream (ice cream).

DailyShots (515 of 1)

And yes, he can turn on an iPhone, get to his SLIDE game, play a few rounds and proclaim “I did it!” with pure delight.

You will notice he favors his Giants hat which he loves. His uncle told him yesterday that he had to take the hat off when he eats. He obliged and said ”okay”.

So divine. An obedient boy. No wonder folks call dibs on this little guy. Yeah, the little big kid.

I Love Long Weekends

Happy first week, sweet baby Alyssa! Just in time for a long Labor Day weekend!

DailyShots (511 of 1)

Guess what mommy’s favorite thing to do is. You guessed it! DRESS YOU UP! (pssst. mommy hasn’t changed!) You’re a doll from head to toe.

DailyShots (500 of 1)

Grammie (now ‘Ammie’) was happy to have her two favorite babies with her yesterday.

Nate is talking a mile a minute. New fave word is ”yeah” which mom/dad are trying to correct to ”yes”. Little luck but he’s working on it.

Tomorrow we will be having a family luncheon with four generations of my family. Spanish tapas and sangria in the menu. Hope to get some good photos from that but with wiggly and active kids, I may need to bring extra memory and batteries for the camera. I’m also hoping to jump start my niece into photography. Although I’m just honing up my own skills, I may have enough knowledge to keep her interests sparked. She is gifted and creative.

Today will be a quiet home day, catching up on chores..and spending some quality time with Newman (our pup). Good enough. Quiet days have been missing from our calendars lately so today being nice and cool will be perfect. I also have a few recipes from a friend that I may want to try. Do I sense an awakening of the dormant domestic goddess in me? Hmmm, we’ll see. I’ll report back later.

The Hereditary Beauty Spot

Can a beauty spot be passed down through the generations? My thinking is yes it can. Unfortunately, in our family, it’s the boys that are sharing the mole. Wish we women would be so lucky.

My grandpa had one, so does my uncle. Now the next generation is sporting the same mole, in almost the same spot.

Well..some of us girlies have dimples..so there is hope for our little ones. At least we ALL have a sense of humor!

Muslin Baby Wraps

You’d think there wasn’t anything left to invent as far as babies were concerned…but, guess what! Wrong. There are lots of new baby items we’ve found and are (so far) liking a few new items.

Here’s one of them (which you’ll see we’re sort of favoring).

2009-09-03_1927This is from Aden + Anais, a company founded by two Australian moms here in the USA. With my own children and my first grandson, swaddling was our preferred method of keeping newborns feeling secure and calm – which in turn, made mom and dad much more relaxed. Since we were having a new grandchild in the hot summer month of August, I wanted to find new wrap in the market which was not made of fleece (too hot) or jersey (hot cool enough). To my delight I saw this muslin blanket (via online research) and found it at the Los Gatos Baby and Tot Boutique. This wrap is a generous 47”x47” – enough to wrap our little peanut, keep her secure and not hot at all.

Folded up, it makes a great pad to lay a baby on and helps you pick up the baby in one scoop, neck secure.

DailyShots (407 of 1)

Now why didn’t we think of that!

Easy to Love

I’m amazed everyday at how quick the recovery is these days from childbirth. Mommy is amazing and daddy is loving every moment of being able to help out. My afternoon visit allowed me time to bond with this adorable bundle of little baby joy.

The little one is doing what she’s suppose to do.

So simple. So easy.

Meanwhile..

Meanwhile, back at the farm homefront..as I was getting ready to spend the afternoon helping the new mommy and daddy… our little pooch had other things in mind.

DailyShots (277 of 1)

Like…CHEWING the power cord of the laptop I was bringing me! Grrrrrr. It’s the ONLY cord he has chewed on, TWICE!

So it was Ground Dog day today – yep, Newman’s grounded.

And I can’t charge my laptop. Good thing you’re a cutie!

First Day at Home

Today was Alyssa’s first day at home. So far, so good. Although she’s lost 12oz. off her birth weight, momma is hard at work feeding the tiny little one.

Everything is new. Life is new. Routines will work themselves out. Today, while the two sibling sisters were teaching/learning the pump, I stared at this little one…and clicked away.

DailyShots (355 of 1)

DailyShots (359 of 1)

Warning: Staring at a newborn baby is contagious. Especially on their first ‘quiet’ day home. Shhhhhh…sleep when you can!

Sometimes I wonder how you can fall in love instantaneously. Or, I ask the question “where’ve you been all my life?” Oftentimes, these days (while I’m dabbling in amateur photography), little things I normally wouldn’t have noticed are captured in detail for me to look at up close and personal.

God’s perfection. How marvelous is HE that all of us are so unique. And beautiful. And wonderful to stare at.

For the 2nd time in two years, I’ve been fortunate to ask this question again ~ and just feel the amazement and the blessing.

Welcome Home, Baby Alyssa! Another PERFECT creation.

It Gets Better!

So..this is a question I’ve been asking myself all day today.

DailyShots (259 of 1)

What is better than having the most fantastic GRANDchild in the world? You know, that one who flashes the brightest smile and runs to you to give you a great big hug when he sees you? I have an answer to that!

Why, of course…. having TWO GRANDchildren!!

DailyShots (311 of 1)

We welcomed our little princess into our family on Friday, August 28. The delivery and birth were streamed on Facebook for family and friends in the waiting room. She’ll be home with mommy and daddy tomorrow and now there’s more to love, much more to discover – multiplied by TWO.

DailyShots (314 of 1)

I’m in love … all over again!

My Inner Man

I appreciate my husband a lot. He’s comfortable in his own skin and in touch with his feminine side, not afraid to wear pink and the baby cologne I like to smell (me not a fan of men’s cologne!).

And vice versa.

I like to think he appreciates me because I can do manly work around the house. Like change the lightbulbs, or a doorknob. I can even repair a non-working doorbell. My mother was successful in raising me and my other sisters so that we were comfortable with a screwdriver and could tell the difference between a flathead and a philips tip. A drill and a dremmel.

So, fast forward to our current room remodel which I will make happen tomorrow! I needed to get 230 sq. ft. of wood flooring. We are again ripping off carpet in our soon-to-be TV room and since it’s an add-on room, there are no wood floors to recover. COSTCO provided the best solution and I went there today and put all this in my cart. (We checked IKEA yesterday and I checked out Home Depot last week).

DailyShots (190 of 1)

Eleven into the cart, and again into the back of my car.

“Do you need any help unloading to your car?” asked the nice gentleman checking me out. “No thanks, I can manage”. There’s that pride thing again! Rosie the Riveter comes to mind many times.

A couple men asked me if I needed help and I declined. It must’ve been because I wore a DRESS and was careful when I was bending to get the wood in the bottom part of my cart. Silly me! A dress!!

Well – there you go! Job done today and tomorrow we will have yet another newly refurbished room.

As to any and all women reading this – let me tell you how free I feel being able to do many things myself. Things get done and I don’t have to wait for a very tired husband to do this after work. Or take up his precious weekend. He works hard all day ~ and lets me know many times how appreciated he is that I can be a girlie girl..in touch with my inner man.

Here’s to Rosie – you know – the Riveter.

Someone did a good job at work and got a prize for it! Hip hip, a toy! Oh joy!

DailyShots (188 of 1)

Good motivating promo! Now HOW to collect all 24 vehicles!

DailyShots (189 of 1)

I like the airplane SPECS. The plane will lift almost anything. This plane could carry you, your car, and your whole house! Really? My whole house? Wow.

Wait till Nate gets a hold of this!

Finishing Touches

I woke up really later than I had planned to today. Serves me right for blocking Newman (our pup) from our bedroom hallway! We have this really neat baby gate that we bought two of. One for Nate (GRANDson) and one for Newman (pet cocker spaniel/poodle mix). It works wonders! Did you ever appreciate how many of the baby widgets can be used for pets too? Hmmm.

DailyShots (187 of 1)

Since our puppy is too smart and figured out all the other contraptions we’ve used to block him from waking me up at 6am, we decided he couldn’t get through this safety gate! And he can’t. But guess what! He figured out at 10:00a.m. that BARKING would get me out of the room! Go figure..who’s smarter?!!

Since I had a late start in the day, the morning was rather ‘rushed’ but we got everything done in time for us to spend our 6th weekly Wednesday Walk & Waddle with momma-to-be and the entire gang.

Sweet Alyssa, you need to come really soon because your mommy’s going to pop. She’s got no more room in her belly, sweetheart. We’re ready when you are!

Final touches and accessories from IKEA today. Both Nate and Alyssa’s room(s) will be complete by the weekend. Nathan is LOVING his big boy room and all the trappings that come with play and discovering.

DailyShots (186 of 1)

And he IS discovering…and playing!

Excitement Building

The nursery awaiting our little grand baby daughter is almost ready! Daddy painted the room with the coolest, most soothing color ~ and put the crib together because he was so excited! Mommy-to-be has washed all the little onesies and now all we need is Little Alyssa to make her grand entrance into our lives.

crib

My daughter unveiled the big reveal today (on Facebook, of course) ~ including what’s waiting for the little sweetheart who will definitely be dressed in style! This is just the drawer ~ the closet is full !!

crib3

This is so thrilling! We can all hardly wait!

crib2

Oh blissdom! Now…about the WAITING part (!!!!!)

All Day Doggie Day

My home has turned into a doggie day care – for today at least. I’m doggie sitting my son’s two pups – an American Eskimo pup and a yorkipoo who I can’t catch.

So far, so good. But it’s only 9:45am. We’ve been up since 7.

2009-08-15_0948

This one’s the baby (Sam) – and the only female. And missing her dad and mom..so she’s on my lap a lot. I have a feeling she knows I’m grammie so she’s been by my side by default. She’s sweet (but she’s a bit wary of other people, including my hubby (y’know..the deep voice one)..so he’s been giving her treats and she’s warming up to him.

DailyShots (149 of 1)

Puma is the oldest but the smallest and I can’t take a good picture of him because he’s too fast and always running around. The terrier in him makes him the alpha dog (or maybe his size gives him the quick advantage). He’s terribly loving and this one bonded with me early.

DailyShots-143

And then, of course, there’s my Newman who doesn’t know what the heck is going on and why his cousin’s are here so early in the morning.

How in the world did St. Francis handle all those doggamajigs! I guess I’ll be headed out to the pet store in a little bit.

Here’s my list for Petco:

  • Nylabone…same flavor (the beefy tasting one). Quantity 3
  • Kong treats – the big one that will give me at least an hour’s worth of quiet time. Quantity 6 (maybe)
  • Tag silencers (quantity 6)

In the meantime, it’s a beautiful Saturday morning in sunny California! Since my home is now ‘carpet free’ the pups have virtually a whole house to run around in.

2009-08-15_1026

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend. Ours will be very ‘interesting’ – but I’m game. Heck, grandbabies, remember? That includes the 4-legged kinds.

Woof!!

Our one an only grandchild is soon going to share the limelight. He’s in a good place, though. He is ready to welcome his little cousin – and has declared that he’s no longer ‘a baby’.

In one home, we are putting the finishing touches in a little girl’s sweet bright nursery. Her closet is already full – and the clothes only go up to 3 months. In the other home, someone’s moving on up…to the big boy room – which mommy hasn’t shown him yet (we will be there to carry him over the threshold!). My family likes to celebrate small milestones like these! Love it. Stay tuned for pictures of the Big (Bedroom) Reveal!

ww5_2

We have about 3 more weeks to go. Today was our 5th weekly Wednesday walk and waddle. My kids and the kidlet (and I) spent the day at Santa Clara. Lunch at The Counter and then a little stroll after that.

Baby Alyssa is going to wear the same Welcome Home outfit that Nate wore when he came home from the hospital. New tradition. She’s also going to be baptised in the same baptismal gown Nate wore. Their names and baptismal dates will be embroidered on the gown. It, too, will be a tradition.

It’s nice wonderful to see my own children share and start new important memories and milestones with their families. Sometimes, I get to just sit back and smile.

Somewhere in my past…I must’ve done something good.

Batter Up!

We’re in the playoffs! Venue…AT&T Park, San Francisco.

DailyShots-122

Us nervous nellies were excited to watch our favorite player (Nate!) who was in the lineup for today playing 1st base. Nathan, batting cleanup and has already hit a double in the 7th inning to bring the team to within 1 run. Score is 2-1 and we’re in the bottom of the 9th inning.

DailyShots-108

The Team

In the sidelines is Mr. Inconspicuous, who’s blending in with the crowd. He’s a major league scout and he’s calling the SF Giants management to tell them to watch out for ‘The Natural 2.0″ with the glove (”his hand”)- and a mean baseball swing.

DailyShots-123

“We’ve got a Natural here, boss. You should see this kid! Word is that he just turned 2 today, but he’s already got this passion for and understanding of the game, and a mean swing!”

dailyshots_133

He’s batting now, make sure you are watching the game – he’s already brought us to within 1 run…no! … Wait!

DailyShots-124

We just scored a run! A stolen base! It’s tied now, 2-all! I gotta go watch this Kid!

Score is now tied- 2 all! Nate is up and here we go! Pressure’s mounting. The opposing team is moving way back back back!

Life’s Miracle

Beautiful Boy (John Lennon)
Out on the ocean sailing away,
I can hardly wait,
To see you to come of age,
But I guess we’ll both,
Just have to be patient,
Yes it’s a long way to go,
But in the meantime,
Before you cross the street,
Take my hand,
Life is just what happens to you,
While your busy making other plans,
Beautiful, Beautiful,
beautiful, Beautiful Boy,

Now, as you turn into a Terrific Two year old, I want to thank you for being such a sweet child. For being curious, gentle and full of wonderment. For enjoying and loving all the things your mom and dad (and all of us!) share with you. For being so genuinely happy to see us when we visit and telling us to ’stay’ when we get ready to leave (that’s the hard part). You are so easy to love, and even at your young and tender age, you know how to love back.
You’ll soon be relinquishing the baby ‘crown’ to little Alyssa and I know you’ll be so cool (and protective) of her. It feels good right now to know that she will always have you around.

We have two years full of memories and precious moments (Nono’s favorite) to fill up more scrapbooks than mommy can handle. You are a joy to behold and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you.

From the looks of it, you can do anything you want and you’ll be great at it.

dailyshots_141
Here’s looking at you, kid!

We have one more month to go before baby Alyssa enters our lives. To make the time go by fast, we are spending every Wednesday doing what we call “Wednesday Walk and Waddle”. Lunch with my kids and Nate and then we walk off our lunch and hope to somehow get that little baby to drop a little bit at a time.

Yesterday’s lunch at the Cheesecake Factory was long, leisurely and lovely. Long because the momma-to-be couldn’t decide what she wanted to eat (lots to choose from and many pee breaks!) Long because be were tempted.

By all this!

DailyShots-50

Look at these layers and fudge!

We’re almost Two! I mean Nate is…on Sunday. I can’t believe how quickly time’s flown by – or maybe, we’re really having a blast!

We are spending Nate’s birthday at AT&T Park – watching a Giants baseball game. The little man walked into the Giants store at the mall with two fists pumping the air and loudly proclaiming “Go Giants!!” Man, did he recognize the logo!

With that said – he earned the rights to the crown . . . err helmet. We are passing this on to the next generation.

DailyShots-36

DailyShots-39

For all you baseball scouts out there watch out for this kid. He’s already hitting, running, sliding and kicking dirt.

DailyShots-35

I know a natural swing when I see it. Trust me. This kids got some kind of ball in his future. Daddy be proud. Mama be delighted.

Ballerina Girl

One more month (hopefully) and you’ll be here. We’re all excited. And ready.

July29Weds-28

Ready to Love You.

Yesterday, your mom and aunt, your uncle and your cousin (the troop) all went to Babies R Us to order the perfect crib for you, and the safest mattress. Nothing but the best, just like your cousin. We completed everything mommy and daddy needed for your arrival and your nursery. Mommy isn’t nesting yet ~ but your grammie and your auntie are. Funny how that goes.

Last week, your daddy’s family threw the BIGGEST town fiesta style baby shower for you. Lucky girl. Loved by so many ~ already.

Little dancer. We are counting the days.

July29Weds-29

Until then, stay safe and God bless.

Wondering

These days, I wonder what’s in a child’s mind. What’s he or she thinking at the tender age of almost two. What information do they process and how much do they absorb? When my children were little, I didn’t wonder like this. I was busy getting them ready for school or child care in the morning, then I’d come home to help with homework, figure out dinner, bathtime and then bedtime. Weekends were all about keeping them (and us) busy ~ kind of recovering from a work week. Weekly.

But now I have time. To wonder. Daily.

Two is delightful! Two is when the world (or any big store) is your playground.

July29Weds-16

You can spell your own name (maybe) and scribble all over it thinking you did such a great job! Self esteem begins from day one.

You can even be an athlete ~ name your BALL and you have someone to play catch with just cuz you’re so sweet ~ and naturally athletic. This day, it was football. Daddy be proud!

July29Weds-9

July29Weds-22

July29Weds-20

TOUCHDOWN!!

Can you already hear the crowd go wild?

July29Weds-24

I love it. I wonder how much fun you’re having. I know I’m having a blast!

As some of you know, I’ve been dabbling in photography since the early part of June and have been having a lot of fun with it. I’ve also been improving my software editing skills using both Photoshop and LightRoom 2 (both from Adobe). Coming along for this ride with me is my much-more-tech-inclined son and as expected (by me), all it took was a quick LOOK AT THIS! and he was hooked. He’s also now doing all the research and has completely gone techie on me. Love it! Who needs books when you have a kid to help you!

This photograph was fun to produce using my camera, PS and LR2 and some files I had from iStockPhoto. It isn’t hard to do really and once you understand the process, you’ll want to play with all your photographs and make them look old.

Yep, you’re right..grammie’s still part time techie and learning, and having a blast. My days are full and busy with a nice combination of work and play. Can’t really ask for more. I’m blessed.

I recently had the opportunity to photograph all our pets. Mine, my son’s and my sister’s. All our family furrballs.

LUnch0720-6

072509-5

This is my dog, Newman. NEWMAN!! He’s half cocker spaniel and half poodle; a cockapoo but that sounds like a bird to me. The first picture above is right after he was recently groomed. We take anti-depressants everytime we send him off for a trim because he comes back so poodle-y. We prefer his royal fuzz, really. And the hubby ~ well, you know men and poodles.

Gabby-9

LUnch0720-4

This is my Gabby and Tifa’s 2nd baby dog. Her name is Samantha and she knows she’s female. She’s really pretty and prissy, but sweet. She’s a pure miniature American Eskimo dog (without the lipstick). She is almost a year old so she won’t be so big. Which is good, because her playmate is really little!

LUnch0720-7

Gabby-5

This little! Puma is a Yorkipoo and because he’s dark and frisky (and a Michael Jordan-in-his-prime high jumper) he’s a hard one to photograph! He’s terribly loving and playful and is the smallest of all the pets.

oreo-22

LUnch0720-9

Last, but certainly not the least, is our sweet Oreo . . or as Nathan, our grandson calls him “OWEO”. The most trained of the crew (and the oldest, he’s 2). Naturally, he belongs to my sister! Oreo is a purebred Shitzu and always smells like he just came out of the salon.

Put them all together and there’s chaos for a couple minutes until the owner of the home establishes dominance and sets the rules. Watching them play is priceless – especially when there’s a little boy in the mix.

Unconditional love. Yeah, that’s what you get in return from these furry friends.

Oh Time! Slow Down!

Time sure flies by when you’re having fun! But I want it to slow down! I like Nathan’s mom (a teacher) spending the summer with him. I like seeing him at least once a week and doing something together. I loved preparing for the baby shower and then going to another town fiesta-style baby shower. I like meeting my son for lunch and talking geek.

Don’t you?

This last week was one of my busiest. We had a room makeover. My office which was a mish mash of carpet over carpet has not been converted to it’s original hardwood splendor. Thank goodness for old homes. I had originally intended to post before and after pictures but after seeing the transformation, I’m sort of embarrassed. My kids know and getting a “WOW” from them is good enough for me.

And it wasn’t even expensive. I could easily have been in one of HGTV’s Design on a Dime show, really! I’m almost done. I just need to tweak things a little bit and add some of my prints on my walls.

Shower2-34

Prints from my new hobby – Photography – which I’m thoroughly enjoying and can play with in bits and pieces of my day and more leisurely in the evenings.

So in this space, I have everything I need for work and my hobbies. I even moved Newman’s crate in here so he can chill with me (he’s doing that as I type). What more can a grand mama love, eh? Well, maybe having the little monster here would be nice but I’ll see him tomorrow.

Fun. So much of it. Time – please slow down.

I love how children view the world.

Let Them Be Little

We have begun our Wednesday Wait. To make the last two months of pregnancy go by fast, we need every Wednesday for lunch and a stroll. This was our first of hopefully not more than 8 weeks of infanticipation.

We had Nate with us, so we opted for Main Street Burgers in Los Gatos which allowed a child ample room to run and release some energy.

WeekWed (14 of 1)

Burger and Shake Nirvana (especially the shakes!)

WeekWed (13 of 1)Crunch french and sweet potato fries (so not greasy!) A must!!

WeekWed (7 of 1)

Lots of running room! Someone was happy!

After a wonderful old fashioned soda fountain style meal..we were ready for a stroll on lovely Main Street. We had calories to burn!

We do this again next week, in another location with good eats and a cool place to shop till the mommy-to-be drops.

Our Baby Shower

The last week and a half have gone by so fast and I have much to share.

First off, an update on my warp speed education in photography. I am learning so fast. Right now, I’ve been favoring my 50mm f/1.8 II lens (Canon) and working hard towards saving up for an even faster lens. However for the time being, this affordable light lens is what I’ve been using for these photos.

Danielle’s baby shower was a lot of fun! The event was held at my sister’s home in Belmont and was beautifully decorated. Tiny details were of course handled by my oldest daughter, Joanna…and there were LOTS of them.

It was a very pink party. Fresh hydrangias from the yard.

shower (5 of 1)

My sister just returned from a couple weeks in Mallorca ~ so the sangria flowed!

It was great to see family and friends. The games organized by my daughter’s childhood friends were hilarious and very well thought out. The kids did their best homework!

It was a delightful Saturday afternoon. What more can a mom want other than to see her daughter being showered with love.

The last couple of weeks have been quite frenetic for the news media. All of a sudden, all that was important was the strange events in the life of a musical legend who had suddenly died. It was quite sad, from my point of view, that they couldn’t wait until the man was mourned and laid to rest.

I switched to Easy Listening music for the most part. Until the memorial yesterday. For the human being who was a man, a brother, son and most of all, a father.

I could never be a news analyst. The negativity would drive me nuts. I like to surround myself with happy energy and that includes people – music – good eats – clean sheets. I wish there was a channel that just covered Good News and people who go out of their way to make someone’s life a little better. Or some child who overcomes barriers to achieve success.

But no. We’re not that kind of society. We like controversy. We like to built up celebrities, watch them rise and fall. We are intrigued by glitz and glam, hardly realizing that there are hearts and souls behind these mere mortals. And in the end..that’s what we ALL are.

Mere mortals.

In the end, we leave everything behind. Everything but the memories. While we will be mourned by a few or many, that, too, shall pass and life will go on for the living.

While you’re busy doing your daily thing – do you ever wonder what your legacy will be? I will tell you how I want to be remembered in the next post that I’ll be writing. The story of Beverly – how she lived, how she died – and what she left us with. It’s a good story.

I love clear, cool evenings in California. In fact, we can’t complain about the weather here because the Bay Area has the most perfect weather in the world. When it’s hot here, it’s always worse somewhere else.

After a rather fun and busy weekend, we retired and went to sleep early, at 8pm. At 11pm I decided to take Newman (our doggie) for one more outing. Thank goodness I did that…because the sky was so bright! Two days before the full moon, I was able to capture this.

070509_Moon

What’s not to appreciate?

While processing the photos, I was listening to jazz music that a friend was posting on Facebook…so that was my way of relaxing last evening before I finally called it a day at around midnite.

So much for going to bed early :) Another perk of ‘Grandma-hood’ ~ ya gotta love everything about it!

Our street is blocked off for a neighborhood barbeque all day long until the last sparklers are expended. Happy Fourth of July from our neck of the woods!

And while you’re out grilling and enjoying the holiday, lets remember why we love this country and say a prayer for all those brave men and women who protect our liberties.

Ahhhh…it’s a hard enough life for us!

Throw away all those “terrible twos’ notions because Two is NOT terrible.

It’s just the beginning of discovery. New words surprise you every day (watch your language!). Little ones are much more daring and adventurous and it’s one of the best times ever in a child’s life to document precious moments. You can’t rewind them.

At almost two (22 months), Nathan is loving the water. I just love bonding days with GRANDme and child (and mommy, too!). Now there are swim lessons!

nateday070209

and NO, we’re not afraid to jump in either! Then it was off to Los Gatos where we enjoyed yummy spaghetti from Guardino’s and shopped at the Los Gatos Baby and Tot Boutique, which is one of my favorite little people store!

nate070209a

“Ma! Muscles, Ma…Lookit!”

This special gifted child has a vocabulary that grows exponentially every time I see him (he recognizes our President “Abama” when he sees him on the television).

nate070209b

We found a wonderful book about everything Nate loves to do! He already loves being read to and can finish off the sentences in Goodnight Moon.

This almost two year old is ready to appreciate the world around him. And wow, does he know how to love back!

I feel so blessed.

Oh…btw, check out this Fleurville Lunch Pack that we found at the LG Baby store. Nate likes his ‘pack pack’!!

natecake070209

….ooops, yup :) we went to a bakery and they had a lot of goooood stuff!

I’m taking this CHANGE thing for another spin. I mean LOOSE change you can use. If you’re like me, you don’t carry a change purse for coins. My coins used to lay on the bottom of a purse only to be found in dire need ~ like for parking.

A couple years ago, we decided to put our daily change into our piggy banks. Yeah, you know…the one that doesn’t get deposited in the bank (boring) or thrown into a Coinstar machine (desperate). We began a daily ritual of saving every penny, nickel, dime and quarter every night.

IMG_6964

The first year we had His and Hers piggy banks. But that took forever! My clever husband then combined both into this one (above). We were amazed to see that we had each saved almost an identical amount of spare change. Only $0.75 separated our individual banks. Together we had over $150.00 in coins! We vacuum packed exactly $150.00 and packed it away (it’s never going to Coinstar). We decided to do it again.

And this is where we are today, on our 2nd refill (see our bank’s a little worn)! That’s a good sign!

IMG_6965

At the beginning of our Change Is Big idea, we were not in this economic conundrum that our country is in ~ but seeing how every little bit helps, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to give you all a piece of Financial Advise. Save the old fashioned way!

  • Keep Savings Fun. Make it a challenge.
  • Keep the piggy bank handy. A good place to put it is in a place where it is easily accessible.
  • Everyone in the household participates (even the guests who come visit)!
  • Empty your pockets and purses of all loose change every night. Everything goes in.
  • If you see a penny pick it up ~ then throw it in.
  • You can’t take anything out!
  • This jar barely holds $150. When it’s full pack it up and start over.

We’re closing in on almost $300.00 on money that we otherwise would not have appreciated. Y’know…when you break a $20.00 bill the small bills don’t feel like a lotta money? We need to change our thinking.

Every little bit counts, even the copper pennies. My grandmother would be so proud of us!

Have Hobby, Be Happy

Sometimes, I feel like my mom. She had hobbies and they came in various phases of her life. She loved her garden (she inherited my grandmother’s lusciously green thumb), she knitted and sewed. She was a landscape artist (by hobby not by trade) and had a greenhouse with tons of orchids which I wish I appreciated more then because I love them now. Now she travels and finds good eats. She’s also pretty computer savvy and business smart.

Similarly ~ and strangely around the same age and phase ~ I dabbled in the yard, I sewed pillow cases (straight, but I can thread a machine!), I crocheted, I baked.

I sometimes think that I’m my mom’s life in rewind.

Now I’m really liking my camera and software. I love my three lenses. My husband is painting. When he gets home from work, he can’t wait to play with an excited puppy and then get to his canvas. There is peace and harmony in my home.

Hobbies. It’s the alternative to throwing good money at things you don’t really need (i.e. the mall). They keep you out of trouble! It’s what we (grands) need at this time of their lives when there are no more kids to tuck in bed and work is done ~ but those creative juices still need an outlet.

newtoy1

hobbies

It’s how you keep those gray cells moving in your brain. Reading instructions, researching, trying to understand it all or go it ‘my way’ ~ trial and error. Click and delete.

NOTE: Being adept in social media-ness since the early days of AOL chatrooms, I highly suggest you limit your online ‘time’. While it’s good, great and excellent for marketing, it has the potential to distract you from your needs IRL. Trust me on this one and feel free to comment if you agree or don’t agree.

What’s your creative outlet? How do you like to spend your precious time away from work?

I Love You, Already

You’re not here yet, but I love you already.

I can feel your little fingers, they’ll be long like your mommy’s. And those little feet of yours are ready to dance to the rhythm of the music on your daddy’s voicemail.

2009-06-29_1434

You’re not here yet but I know you’re healthy. I was there to watch you move when they took this picture. You even gave us the thumbs up to let us know that all was well in your cozy little space. And the doctor said you were thriving. Did you know we celebrated?

You’re not here yet but I know you’ll be happy. There is family eagerly awaiting your arrival and trust me, we can’t wait for our little girl! Did you ever think people can love someone SO MUCH?

You’re not here yet but time is going by wheelie fast ~ and really, September is just around the corner.

But in case you were wondering ~ just in case you had any questions or doubts ~ I want you to know that

I love you, already.

Way before you were born.

Firstly, we love ETSY (what’s not to love, they’re so crafty!) ~ and even better than that, finding a cool artist who can render the exact invitation we want and charge a very reasonable $15.00 per design. Meet Amy, from the Li’l Bean Sprout and the baby shower she worked on with Jo and which we printed on linen paper.

2009-06-30_0157

It’s very simple but goes with the nursery colors and designs including the snails and the bows. I’m so glad we were able to work with a very sweet lady and please visit her site if you are planning an event. Amy does much more than baby shower invites! We just liked her ideas the best!

And while you’re there..please tell her Joanna sent you! She’ll be very pleased!

The Mini Social

Grandparents LOVE to pamper their littles. Personally, I love the treasure hunt for unique items not usually found in the same old department stores. When we’re able to get out of town, I always look for Main Street and adore little boutiques when and where I can find them. I’m a big fan of mom and pop stores and like to patronize them when I can.

There an online store called The Mini Social that’s fun to visit regularly. The store was conceived by mom’s for mom’s (add grandma!), and provides private access to the most hip and modern designer clothing and accessories for mom, baby and child, all at up to 60% off. The invitation only site features clean, simple design, paired with a super easy shopping experience, and will host two or more designer socials each week.

2009-06-29_1548I don’t exactly remember how I found this store and most of the items they have are for littler babies (than Nathan). However, they have incredible prices if you happen to check them out regularly! And for baby girls…there are many cute little outfits on sale! Check them out!

And expect more GRAND finds from my site.

I was reminded about the Fourth of July holiday this weekend. Over here where we live, fireworks are banned. It will actually be the first Fourth that we’ll be in town. We usually spend the early part of July with family in Connecticut, right on the LI Sound. Being right on the water there, you can sit by the back deck and watch fireworks from as close as next door to as far as the New York side of the Sound.

092909Getting all dressed up for the party

Nevertheless – I’m hoping to spend it where we can at least see some fireworks because I’m getting great tips from Robin! She’s helping me on my quest to take a perfect moonshot (still not accomplished). Hopefully, I can capture a good sky soon!

2009-06-29_1347

Don’t you love engaging with wonderful people? Especially when they encourage you to keep on going when what you’re doing can be a little bit frustrating? Thanks, Robin :) [Public forum for gratitude]

I really wish I brought my DSLR to Hawaii with me. What was I thinking?

I received my copy of LightRoom 2 yesterday and played with it last night (without reading anything, so bear with me). Oh and by the way, welcome to my journey into amateur photography.

Did I tell you I had so many interests?

I met a lovely lady named Robin Burkel on Twitter. Her blog site is right here and she’s been helping and guiding me ever so gently into this wonderful hobby that I’m really enjoying. A nephew of mine who’s quite adept in digital imagery (and fixin’ print stuff!) encouraged me to pick up LightRoom (I already have CS4 loaded on my computer)

My first attempt at LightRoom edits . . hopefully as my learning progresses, you’ll be able to tell a big difference in the near future!

Nate and Owpa

Blissdom!

We had a fabulous Sunday with our family. We took the kids and kidlet to lunch and then we had the little one all afternoon while the rest went to watch ‘Transformers“.

It was the 2nd of two rather warm days in the Bay Area, but we didn’t really care. When you have a little one who is not afraid of water ~ then all’s fair in wet or dry! We opted for playing with the water sprinkler ~ just because it’s so much fun to get water water everywhere!

Sometimes you really have to NOT CARE ~ and Sunday afternoons are made for stuff like this!

Watermelon Day!

Man, it’s a hot one! [seven inches from the midday sun!!] The perfect day for cold watermelon!!

This being a Saturday, I restocked on fruits, vegetables and flowers at my local Farmers Market. Some of my favorite fruits this summer are the peaches and nectarines – and of course, blueberries!

IMG_6043

And I have my favorite vendors. This really nice couple have the sweetest blueberries ever. And best yet, they talk to me about their trips to Europe (sparked by them seeing me taking pictures of the local produce). I love it when I can converse with gentle folks and talk about grandchildren!

What’s your favorite summer fruit?

Reality Checks

There are a number of topics I’d like to write about here in the future (aside from loving my kidlet, of course) Topics that will be useful for us as we navigate the issues we are all confronted with. I encourage you to participate and let me know if these topics are helpful for you. Additionally, if you have additional resources or information which will be helpful for readers, please feel free to share.

Here are just a few of the topics that I’d like to write about . I’m getting my thoughts and resource links together and will post them shortly, but here’s what I’m passionate about. Most are Reality Checks.

Health Care and Health Insurance

Your Living Will

Caregiving & Patient Advocacy

Starting Over (Resources for Looking for Work)

Volunteerism

Adult Education

MakeOver

I hope these will be interesting for you and that you check back shortly. I’m sure there are many things I can learn from you, too!

Grammie Re-Invented

Today’s grandparents are the most technologically adept and wirelessly connected of any group of grands in all of history. Many of us have spent years in a corporate environments, climbing (crawling) our way up managerial levels and holding all that we have learned close to our hearts. The smarts have re-invented themselves and continue to thrive as self employed business professionals with a great deal of experience we can parlay or share with the younger gens who are willing to listen.

IMG_6508

We have to be keep up with our grandchildren!!

BlogHer is a community of talented women bloggers who write about a wide variety of topics. eWomenNetwork is a similar community of mostly women professionals (arts and crafts included) who meet IRL (In Real Life). Your local Chamber of Commerce is also a great medium for connecting and networking for your business.

Additionally, you can engage with people with similar interests if you successfully navigate Twitter (hint: it’s not about the numbers!) and Facebook will allow you to keep in touch with family and business associates (hint: separate the two).

Many of my generation have been affected by the current economic events, some through lay-offs, some through early retirement packages they have had to accept. I hope I can become a resource for you to get through challenging times. If you think about it, 20 – 30 years of work experience is banked knowledge and information you possess. You just need to know how to let that work for you now.

Peace.

King of Hearts

The last few months have been a whirlwind roller coast for us, emotionally. I’ll share the details in future posts (on Patient Advocacy) but the short version is that we recently lost my beloved mother in law at the beginning of the year. Last week, we had to put our 18 year old yorkie terrier down and while she really was my husband’s dog, my own tears flowed knowing that she was a source of joy for him for a very long time.

But life goes on for the living. And I am so fortunate to have my grandson, Nathan, to bring me back to the present. The NOW. Living and loving.

I spent my Monday with him and his mother. And I forgot all my pain. Instead I was filled with awe and wonderment as I’m able to fully enjoy a 22 month old’s journey.

New words. Balls of all sorts. Shaking his booty. Play Pretend.

My heart melts with every new word he repeats. Dialogue. Curiosity. Expression.

There’s a new King of Hearts. And I am forever blessed.

IMG_6435IMG_6447IMG_6443

Blessed are the little children. Keep them pure and innocent.

Mommy bloggers pack a punch on the interweb these days. I’ve met many gifted WAHM’s on Twitter. I would probably surmise that 70% of my friends and followers are Gen X/Y professionals and about 20% are Boomers. You’ll meet some of them here, especially those who are really engaging and have a bazillion bits of information to share on a wide variety of interesting topics. But first, I’d like to point out what kind of united buying power we have. There’s more punch behind the swirls of Rit Dye and rubber bands, peace signs and flowers in my hair.

Our Purchasing Power

I came across this interesting article on the purchasing power Boomers pack. Marketing-wise, you can’t afford to ignore these numbers and statistics. Because we have relatively healthy parents, healthy kids and their kidlets..we might buy ABOVE and BELOW our demographic. We make many more informed suggestions that affect the purchases made by our families. Some of us, the so-called ’sandwich generation’ have seen retirement accounts dwindle. Others were wise enough to listen to our parents who may have gone through a war and a depression and urged us to curtail foolish and needless spending.

As a grandmother who has lived through the dotcom boom/bust and currently, along with our entire country, experiencing the real estate issues that face homeowners, I have much to learn from all of you and my learn days are from Monday through Sunday. I also know what will entice me to buy a product and endorse a product. As a consumer demographic, I buy for myself and my husband’s daily needs at home – and then I indulge my grandson. That’s about it. Except I indulge him a lot. I test, research and say yay or nay and this trickles down to my children and their even tighter wallets. And their network of college educated friends with kids, and THEIR wallets. Trickle down?

I think so.

If I didn’t make mistakes in my life, I probably wouldn’t have much to teach my children. But I did make them. I didn’t do very well with my own MLC (mid-life crisis). Why? I would probably attribute that to not seeking or receiving the guidance when I needed it and not knowing (at the time) what to except as I faced the then inevitable empty nest phase of my journey.

I doted on my children. They were the center of my life and apart from work, everything revolved around them and their activities. Normal for a parent, you would think. But in the process – I forgot that there were two other people that needed to relate.

To make a very long story short, I didn’t pass MLC with flying colors. In fact, consider me flunked. In the process, however, and as I ‘matured’ ~ I realized that this was and is my own journey. I could have used someone’s advise ~ as I now seek to keep my own kids aware of life’s ‘possibilities‘.

As luck would have it, I was given a second chance. I realize now that this journey requires the presence of TWO people, giving and taking, accepting each other’s flaws, communicating and keeping the flame and passion for living alive.

I had to flunk to find the rest of my life. In the process, I found incredible people who have profoundly changed me for the better. Husband, children and new puppy included. I realized how time heals old wounds, how my children can sometimes be smarter than me and how I can combine the past and the present by thinking about the future. I realized that life can be simple, albeit I still sometimes choose to complicate it.

Flunking was not failure and was certainly not the end. It was a wake up call to try again, only this time, harder and hopefully with more wisdom.

I allowed myself that much. I did ~ and I found bliss.

Daily Thoughts

I’m sure I’m not the only WAHW (work-at-home-grandparent) with these same thoughts everyday. I’m a checklist type of person and most of the time, my To-Do list sits right next to me by my bed. I add on to the list in the dark, when I’m trying to fall asleep. A forgotten task – or a marketing tagline. The brain still takes it’s time before it finally finds sleep. Thoughts.

Chores.

Bills.

Business.

Tomorrow dinner.

Family time.

Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelation
And the mind’s true liberation

The times, they have so rapidly a-changed. And by any and all surprising ways. Technology rules where psychedelic designs and incense holders once held top billing spots in paraphernalia. Electronic and wireless gadgetry are available for the unborn, the young and the restless. Fortunately, my work history included many good years in high tech and I consider myself pretty adept in and with computers, cell circuitry and their software offsprings. Keeping in step with a 23 year old techie geeky child remains a self-proclaimed challenge (sometimes I forget I’m still ‘mom’). Google has been my friend for quite some time.

My 22 month old grandson can control an iPhone.

With the current economic conundrum we’re all facing, I wonder how many women of my generation are faced with similar daily To Do lists. I wonder how they handle daily challenges of life. Not just the daily lists but other things we have to think of.

Health.

Aging.

Hormones (or the lack thereof).

Retirement.

It has been 40 years this year since WOODSTOCK. TARGET isn’t about to let us forget! My tie-dyed generation, flower power decal-sticking comrades are still packing it healthy at the gym and we are a demographic to reckon with. Health is our wealth and this GrandME who thought that she’d never have to diet again has accepted her new mantra in life.

Be Fit. And for that, I write.

Look Mom!, I Grow’d Up

When Nate was born almost two years ago, on that moment he entered this world, I proclaimed “a boy!!” “My grandson…I’m a grammie?” I had known then that I was crossing into an unknown demarcation line, but in the last 22 months, the true meaning of ‘grand’-ness has begun to set in. Read on and follow my journey.

The next words out of my mouth were “I’ll never diet again!” Yeah, I know. Momentary lapse there and wishful thinking!

My thought process then was simple “that’s my life” ..in a few short outbursts of excitement! “I’m done! I have a grandchild to love and to hold, from this day forward..for better or worse..no matter how much I weigh“.

Two years ago. That was SO then.

Now we are awaiting the arrival of my second grandchild, Alyssa – coming soon in September.

And I need to be healthy for both of them.

Thus the birth of my new blog for grandparents like me. Baby boomers and flower children (“Us”) and our kids having kidlets (“Them”). A resource for new grandparents, like me, based on what I’m learning from a 22 month old smart cookie who can already navigate an iPhone.

I spent a wonderful day with Nate yesterday and gave pause to think about life. Additionally, a few events this year made me realize that being alive – and healthy – each day is another precious opportunity for loving, sharing and giving.

For the rest of my life, this is my story. At first, I thought I found bliss and I did. But I think I may have felt heaven.

Grandchildren are the cherries on top of a three scoop chocolate sundae with whipped cream and hot fudge. How’s that for goodness!
